BSE Sensex Closes 413 Points Higher, Nifty Surpasses 23,100 Mark

The CSR Journal Magazine

The stock markets have experienced a continued recovery for the second consecutive session, with the BSE Sensex rising by 413.66 points, or 0.56 per cent, to close at 74,729.27 on Friday. The NSE Nifty 50 also saw an increase, advancing by 148.80 points, or 0.65 per cent, to settle at 23,146.15. This upward trend follows a significant rally on Thursday, marking the largest single-day gain for the benchmark indices in the past four months.

Strong buying activity in information technology stocks, particularly Tech Mahindra, Infosys, and TCS, has supported the market’s positive momentum. Investors have responded favourably to encouraging second-quarter earnings reports and developments in global technology markets. The gains were further bolstered by buying interest in auto and metal shares, contributing to overall market sentiment.

As the IT sector extended its winning streak to four sessions, the Nifty IT index surged by 3.92 per cent, making it the strongest-performing sectoral index in this market snapshot. The rally was attributed to better-than-expected revenue results from major IT firms, including Tech Mahindra and Wipro.

Leading Stocks and Sector Performance

Tech Mahindra emerged as the top gainer on the Sensex, surging by 8.45 per cent. Other notable performers included TCS, which rose by 4.61 per cent, and Infosys, climbing by 4.55 per cent. Bharti Airtel and Mahindra & Mahindra also contributed positively, gaining 2.86 per cent and 2.38 per cent, respectively. Additional gainers included Bajaj Finance, HCLTech, and NTPC, which saw increases of 1.38 per cent, 1.08 per cent, and 0.76 per cent respectively.

Conversely, several stocks faced declines, with IndiGo falling by 2.23 per cent and Reliance Industries declining by 1.09 per cent. Other notable losers included Asian Paints, ITC, Larsen & Toubro, and Kotak Mahindra Bank, which all experienced minor drops. This mixed performance reflected strong demand for select large-cap stocks, particularly in the technology sector, while losses in heavyweight stocks limited broader market gains.

The Nifty Media index increased by 1.92 per cent, while the Nifty Auto and Nifty PSU Bank indices rose by 0.75 per cent and 0.67 per cent, respectively. However, some sectors ended lower, including the Nifty FMCG index, which declined by 0.39 per cent, and the Nifty Realty index, which fell by 0.33 per cent.

Broader Market Trends and Investor Sentiment

The broader market did not keep pace with the benchmark indices, as the Nifty 100 rose by 0.61 per cent, and the Nifty 200 gained 0.47 per cent. However, the Nifty Midcap 50 and Nifty Midcap 100 indices experienced slight declines of 0.06 per cent and 0.11 per cent, respectively. The Nifty Smallcap 100 remained nearly flat, slipping by 0.01 per cent. This divergence indicates that the recovery was concentrated in large-cap stocks, particularly within the IT sector.

India VIX, which measures expected market volatility, increased by 0.35 per cent to reach 14.08. Analysts noted that the recent buoyancy in IT stocks, driven by quarterly results, has been a primary factor in the market’s rebound. While the rupee’s strengthening against the US dollar provided some domestic relief, concerns over elevated Brent crude prices, currently near $106 a barrel, and persistent inflation continue to warrant caution among investors.

Looking ahead, investors are advised to monitor upcoming quarterly earnings, global market developments, and foreign investor flows for further direction. Key results from major banking institutions, including HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, and ICICI Bank, are anticipated in early trade on Monday, which could significantly influence market trends.
