BRO Completes Snow Clearance, NH-701A Reopened Ahead of Schedule

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Border Roads Organisation has successfully cleared snow from National Highway 701A, also known as the Old Mughal Road, facilitating its reopening on Friday, ahead of the usual schedule. Typically, this highway remains closed until late March, but prompt action by BRO teams has rendered it accessible earlier this year.

Two Key Stretches Cleared

The snow clearance operations focused on two crucial stretches of the highway. The segment from Bufliaz to Peer Ki Gali in Poonch was cleared under Project Sampark, while the route from Shopian to Peer Ki Gali fell under Project Beacon. The initiation of services on these parts signifies an important step for local connectivity.

Official Presence During the Operation

During the snow clearance operations, VK Rajawat, the Director-General of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, was present at Peer Ki Gali, accompanied by the Chief Engineer of Projects Sampark and Beacon. This visit highlighted the significance of the operations being conducted in harsh winter conditions.

Warning on Adverse Weather Conditions

Lieutenant Colonel Suneel Bartwal, the defense spokesperson, emphasized the risks associated with the remaining snow accumulation on adjacent hill slopes. He noted that, given the current weather patterns, the likelihood of avalanches in vulnerable areas cannot be overlooked. Commuters have been advised to heed traffic advisories issued by the local administrations in Poonch and Shopian to ensure safety during travel.

Regulatory Measures for Commuters

An official spokesperson has urged travelers to maintain heightened caution when navigating the cleared stretch of road. He indicated that the movement of vehicles might be subject to regulations, depending on ongoing weather assessments and safety evaluations by relevant authorities.

Recognition for Snow Clearance Efforts

The Director-General of MoRTH praised the contributions of all personnel involved in the snow clearance endeavors, acknowledging their dedication under extremely challenging conditions. Additionally, he mentioned that planning and reconnaissance for further widening of NH-701A are currently underway, indicating ongoing development in the area.

Progress on Other Highway Projects

During a detailed visit, the Deputy Director-General of MoRTH evaluated the progress of work on NH-144A across all packages, emphasizing the need for expedited efforts to enhance connectivity and infrastructure in the region. These initiatives underscore the commitment to bolstering transportation networks in challenging terrains.
