BMC Launches “Math Thursday” to Boost Students’ Learning with Weekly Online Practice

As part of the Mission Merit initiative, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), in collaboration with Khan Academy India, has launched a new program titled “Math Thursday” for students of BMC-run schools.

Starting this academic year, all students from Classes 6 to 10 in BMC schools will practice mathematics on the Khan Academy digital platform every Thursday between 8 PM and 10 PM, for a minimum of 30 minutes. This initiative has been introduced by the Education Department of the BMC to instill discipline, consistency, and proficiency in the subject of mathematics.

Khan Academy digital platform

Under the guidance of BMC Commissioner and Administrator Mr. Bhushan Gagrani, Additional Commissioner (Eastern Suburbs) Dr. Amit Saini, and on the instructions of Deputy Commissioner (Education) Dr. (Mrs.) Prachi Jambhekar, various innovative initiatives are introduced every year for students of BMC schools.

The Education Department is consistently working to ensure the holistic development of students and to help them succeed in today’s competitive world. As part of these efforts, the new and innovative “Math Thursday” initiative has been introduced this academic year.

Benefits of “Math Thursday”

Regular practice leads to mastery in mathematics. According to international research and data from Khan Academy, practicing mathematics for at least 30 minutes a week results in significant academic progress among students. This initiative will help students develop a habit of studying not only at school but also at home.

Student-Parent Involvement

Through parent-teacher meetings (PTMs), WhatsApp groups, and teacher-parent communication, the initiative is expected to be effective beyond school hours, creating a supportive learning environment in every household.

Implementation of the “Math Thursday” Initiative

Every Thursday, teachers in BMC schools will remind students from Classes 6 to 10 and their parents to log in to the Khan Academy platform and complete math practice and assignments.

The time spent by students on the platform and the skills they practice will be recorded. The Education Department will monitor progress across all schools.

This initiative aims to cultivate a sustained interest in mathematics among students. It also offers teachers and parents the opportunity to support students effectively. Regular weekly practice is expected to reduce students’ fear of mathematics and boost their confidence, said Dr. (Mrs.) Prachi Jambhekar, Deputy Commissioner (Education).
