A devastating incident was reported from Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district late Sunday night, where a man and three of his young daughters were found dead inside their residence. Police are treating the case as a suspected murder-suicide. Two minor sons of the man survived and are currently receiving medical care.
The incident occurred in Navalpur Mishraulia village, Ward Number Four, under the jurisdiction of Sakra police station. The deceased have been identified as Amarnath Ram, 35, and his daughters Anuradha Kumari (12), Shivani Kumari (11), and Radhika Kumari (7). His sons, Shivam Kumar (6) and Chandan Kumar (5), escaped death.
Police Statement
According to officials, Ram allegedly attempted to hang all five of his children before taking his own life. Investigators said he asked the children to stand on a trunk and placed ropes around their necks. While Ram and his three daughters reportedly jumped, the two sons refused and survived.
One of the surviving children, Shivam, later recounted the incident. “I was at home with my father and my siblings. I was using my phone when my father went to the bathroom. When he returned, he hung us one by one. I managed to unite the rope and survive,” he told NDTV.
The tragedy came to light after the two boys informed villagers, who immediately alerted the police. Officers reached the spot, secured the house, and sent the bodies for post-mortem examinations. The district police also summoned a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team to collect evidence from the scene. A case has been registered at Sakra police station.
Ram Struggled with Financial Responsibility
Locals and officials told police that Ram’s wife had died around a year ago, after which he was reportedly under severe mental strain. Villagers said he was also facing financial difficulties and struggling to manage family responsibilities while raising five children alone.
While some residents described the incident as a case of mass suicide, police said the motive has not yet been officially established. “The exact cause of the incident can only be known after the post-mortem examination. The matter is being examined as per the existing norms,” Sub-Divisional Police Officer (East-2) Manoj Kumar Singh said.
Police said they are investigating the matter from all possible angles, and statements from relatives, neighbours, and the two surviving children are expected to help clarify the circumstances that led to the tragedy.
