Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday announced that his government will provide 125 units of free electricity to domestic consumers across the state starting July this year, a move aimed to benefit 1 crore 67 lakh families. The announcement comes just a few months ahead of Bihar elections, which is expected to take place in November.
The CM further said that the state government has decided to install solar power systems on rooftops of houses or at nearby public places with consent of consumers in the next three years. This initiative aims to boost Bihar’s renewable energy capacity and ensure sustainable energy access for the long term.
Taking to social media platform X, CM Nitish Kumar announced in Hindi, “We have been providing electricity to everyone at affordable rates from the very beginning. Now we have decided that from August 1, 2025, that is, from the July bill itself, all domestic consumers in the state will not have to pay any money for electricity up to 125 units. This will benefit a total of 1 crore 67 lakh families in the state. We have also decided that in the next three years, with the consent of all these domestic consumers, solar power plants will be installed on their rooftops or at nearby public places to provide benefits.”
State will bear installation cost for extremely poor families: CM
CM Nitish further informed on his X post that, under the Kutir Jyoti scheme, for extremely poor families, the state government will bear the entire cost of installing solar power systems, and for others, the government will provide necessary financial support.
“This means domestic consumers will no longer have to bear any cost for electricity up to 125 units, and at the same time, it is estimated that within the next three years, up to 10,000 megawatts of solar energy will be available in the state,” he added.
What is Bihar government’s Kutir Jyoti scheme?
The Kutir Jyoti Scheme is an initiative by the Bihar government aimed at providing affordable electricity to households, particularly the extremely poor families. As part of this all domestic consumers in Bihar will receive up to 125 units of electricity free of cost every month, starting August 1, 2025. This will benefit approximately 1.67 crore families across the state. The government plans to install solar power plants on rooftops or in nearby public spaces with the consent of households.
The scheme is designed to reduce the financial burden on families, particularly those in rural and low-income brackets, and promote the use of renewable energy in the state.
The state government estimates that Bihar could generate up to 10,000 megawatts of solar power within the next three years.
Can free electricity be a gamechanger for Nitish Kumar in Bihar elections?
Legislative Assembly election for all 243 constituencies in Bihar is scheduled to be held in October or November 2025, and the free electricity scheme announced by Nitish Kumar’s party, JDU, in alliance with the NDA, could turn out to be a gamechanger. In Bihar, where electricity bills are a significant burden for many households, the provision of 125 units of free electricity could benefit families in both rural and urban areas. The scheme is expected to especially help poor and middle-class households, potentially boosting public support for the Nitish-led government.
CM Nitish Kumar announces jobs to one crore youth by 2030 ahead of Bihar Elections
In a smart move ahead of the Bihar Assembly Elections, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced on Sunday that the state government will provide jobs and employment opportunities to one crore youths over the next five years.
“For the next five years (2025 to 2030), we are setting a target to double the 2020-25 goal by providing government jobs and employment opportunities to one crore youth. To achieve this, new job and employment opportunities will also be created in the private sector, particularly in industrial areas. For this purpose, a high-level committee is being constituted,” Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said in an X post.
