On September 5, Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary assessed the flood preparedness and relief operations in various districts, including Begusarai, Munger, and Khagaria. His visit included an inspection of the Raghopur embankment in Naugachia, where he evaluated the situation and ongoing initiatives. During this inspection, he emphasised the importance of swift action in relief operations amid rising water levels in local rivers.

Prior to the review meeting at the Dinkar Guest House within the Indian Oil Corporation’s premises in Begusarai, the Chief Minister visited the flood-affected area of Kailashpur. He gathered firsthand information about the conditions on the ground, enabling him to direct resources effectively where they are most needed.

District magistrates from Begusarai, Munger, and Khagaria provided detailed briefings on the situation. This included information on the water levels of the Ganga, along with data about flood-affected panchayats and urban local bodies, the availability of boats, and community kitchens set up to assist residents.

24-Hour Community Kitchens and Medical Assistance

Choudhary instructed officials to establish and maintain 24-hour community kitchens in flood-affected areas. He stressed the necessity of ensuring that these kitchens operate continuously to meet the needs of those displaced by the flooding. The availability of medical assistance was also a priority, with directives for mobile medical teams and boat ambulances in regions with difficult access.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister noted the importance of continuous monitoring of the flood situation. He requested that all district ministers and principal secretaries remain stationed in their districts to oversee relief activities and provided directions to ensure effective community engagement.

He emphasised the requirement for medical camps to conduct health check-ups for residents affected by the floods and called for a comprehensive plan to assist farmers adversely impacted by the situation. Choudhary insisted that eligible farmers must receive benefits from crop insurance and directed officials to prepare contingency plans for crop alternatives.

Flood Preparedness and Infrastructure Maintenance

The Chief Minister highlighted the necessity for ongoing monitoring of river water levels and instructed teams to mobilise quickly for relief and rescue operations as situations developed. Essential resources, including boats, life jackets, and rescue teams, are to be kept ready for emergencies, in addition to maintaining adequate supplies of anti-erosion materials.

Choudhary underlined the importance of monitoring all protective and zamindari embankments. He ordered immediate repair work in areas prone to erosion and highlighted the need for continuous updates on flood-affected families via the Sampurti portal, which would facilitate timely delivery of aid to those in need.

During discussions with reporters, Choudhary pointed out that the Ganga’s water levels are rising at multiple locations, with significant discharges recorded. He assured the public that the administration remains vigilant and is providing all necessary support while also working towards permanent solutions to flood-related issues.

His plans include strengthening embankments along the Ganga, Kosi, Gandak, and Son rivers, as well as undertaking comprehensive dredging and desilting operations. These initiatives aim to enhance flood resilience and mitigate future risks, ensuring the safety of local communities.
