Promising Young Bengal Cricketer Priyojit Ghosh Dies of Cardiac Arrest at 22

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a heartbreaking incident, Bengal’s budding cricketer Priyojit Ghosh passed away at the age of 22 following a sudden cardiac arrest. Once dreaming of playing Ranji Trophy and knocking on the doors of the national team, Priyojit’s cricket journey came to a tragic halt on Friday morning, leaving the Kolkata Maidan community and the cricket fraternity in deep mourning.

A resident of Bolpur in Birbhum district, Priyojit had been a rising star in Bengal’s cricket circuit. He first gained recognition during the 2018–19 season of the CAB-organised Inter-District U-16 Tournament, where he emerged as the highest run scorer. His performance had earned him an award from the Cricket Association of Bengal , a medal that still adorned his home.

According to family sources, the young cricketer regularly trained at a local gym in Bolpur’s Mission Compound area to maintain peak fitness , a trait inspired by icons like Virat Kohli. It was during a routine workout on Friday morning that Priyojit suddenly collapsed and later succumbed to a cardiac arrest.

His untimely death has sent shockwaves through his circle of teammates, friends, and relatives. Grief-stricken tributes poured in from across the cricketing community.

Doctors treating the case said cardiac deaths among young individuals, while once rare, are becoming alarmingly common. A section of medical experts suspect long-term effects of COVID-19 could be contributing to the rise in cardiovascular issues among the youth. Data indicates that since 2000, such deaths have been increasing globally at a rate of 2% annually. Notably, India accounts for nearly one-fifth and increasingly close to one-fourth of all global cardiovascular-related deaths.

Health experts are now urging young adults to regularly monitor their blood pressure, blood sugar, and weight once they cross the age of 25, emphasizing the importance of early prevention and awareness.

As Priyojit’s cricketing dreams are laid to rest far too soon, his story stands as both a tribute to his passion and a grim reminder of a growing health crisis.
