All India Bar Association Writes to PM Modi Seeking Probe into Class VIII Chapter on ‘Judicial Corruption’

The CSR Journal Magazine

The All India Bar Association has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting a detailed investigation into the inclusion of a chapter addressing alleged “corruption in the judiciary” in the Class VIII syllabus. The Association has termed the content objectionable and expressed concern over its potential impact on public confidence in the justice system.

Concerns Over Impact on Young Students

In a formal communication, Dr. Adish C. Aggarwala, Chairman of the Association and former President of the Supreme Court Bar Association, outlined the body’s objections. According to the letter, the chapter contains broad and unverified allegations that could negatively influence young students’ perceptions of the judiciary.

The Association argues that introducing such themes at the school level goes beyond academic discussion and may risk undermining trust in one of the foundational pillars of India’s constitutional democracy.

Call for Inquiry and Accountability

The Bar body has urged the government to initiate a comprehensive review of the processes through which the chapter was conceptualized, drafted, and approved. It has sought identification of individuals involved in incorporating the material and called for scrutiny of whether any vested interests influenced its inclusion.

The letter reportedly acknowledges the Prime Minister’s commitment to safeguarding the independence and dignity of the judiciary, while requesting decisive steps to address the matter.

Safeguarding Institutional Integrity

The Association emphasized that preserving the credibility and independence of the judiciary is a shared responsibility among all constitutional stakeholders. It reiterated its commitment to upholding judicial integrity and offered support for any corrective or investigative measures deemed necessary by the government.

The issue has sparked debate about the balance between academic freedom and institutional sensitivity, particularly when complex constitutional themes are introduced at the school level. Further developments are awaited as the government reviews the concerns raised by the legal body.
