‘Ballet and Opera “defeated” Timothée Chalamet’: Jokes Jon Stewart

The CSR Journal Magazine

Comedian and television host Jon Stewart recently addressed remarks made by actor Timothée Chalamet concerning the declining interest in ballet and opera. During an episode of The Daily Show, Stewart humorously claimed that ballet and opera had “defeated” Chalamet in light of his recent Oscar loss for Best Actor to Michael B. Jordan for his role in ‘Sinners’.

Stewart’s comments came after Chalamet expressed concerns that theatrical releases might follow the same fate as ballet and opera, where artists strive to keep these art forms alive despite waning public interest.

Stewart’s Take on Chalamet’s Remarks

In his segment, Stewart elaborated on the ongoing debate surrounding the relevancy of traditional art forms. He remarked, “As you are well aware, a terrible war has been raging for two weeks now. But as of last night, it is clear that opera and ballet have defeated Timothée Chalamet.

No contest! A knockout!” Stewart humorously referred to the involvement of acclaimed prima ballerina Misty Copeland during a performance of ‘Sinners’, stating, “Right in front of him! Boom!” He even jokingly suggested changing his social media profile picture from a Ukrainian flag to a ‘Die Fledermaus’ playbill.

Chalamet’s Original Comments and Backlash

During a recent Town Hall event hosted by CNN and Variety, Chalamet had voiced concerns about the longevity of theatrical releases, stating he did not want them to end up like ballet or opera, where efforts are made to keep these forms alive despite apparent disinterest from the public. Following these comments, there was a significant backlash on social media, predominantly from members of the ballet and opera communities who took issue with his statements.

Misty Copeland’s Response

Misty Copeland, who participated in the press tour for ‘Sinners’ and performed at the Academy Awards, was quick to defend ballet and opera in response to Chalamet’s take. In a viral clip, she stated, “There is a reason that the opera and ballet have been around for over 400 years.” Copeland emphasized that had it not been for the influence of these art forms, Chalamet might not have enjoyed the opportunities that his acting career afforded him. “So all of these mediums have a space, and we shouldn’t be comparing them,” she added.

Academy Awards Reference

During the 98th Academy Awards, host Conan O’Brien made light of the situation in his monologue, mentioning heightened security due to concerns over potential backlash from the opera and ballet communities. He humorously noted that they were displeased with the omission of jazz from the discussions surrounding the performances. The 98th Academy Awards took place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 16, and the event is accessible for Indian audiences via streaming on JioHotstar.
