In a shocking incident in Jammu’s Royal Park, an attempted assassination of Farooq Abdullah, the chief of the National Conference and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, was thwarted on Wednesday. Omar Abdullah, the current Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, described the event as an assassination attempt and expressed his concern over how the assailant was able to approach his father given that he was under Z+ security protection provided by the National Security Guard (NSG).

During a marriage celebration, a man armed with a loaded pistol attempted to shoot Farooq Abdullah, but the close protection team soon intervened and deflected the shot, thus preventing a potential tragedy.

Confirmation of Arrest and Investigation Status

Nasir Aslam Wani, an advisor to the Chief Minister, confirmed that there were no injuries resulting from the incident and that the perpetrator has been detained. Wani, who was on-site during the encounter, stated that the accused is a resident of Purani Mandi in Jammu and has been taken into custody for questioning. He stressed that it was premature to draw conclusions regarding the incident, emphasizing the need for police investigation to ascertain how the assailant managed to breach security protocols in the vicinity of a high-profile individual.

Wani conveyed reassurance regarding Farooq Abdullah’s condition, mentioning that he is currently resting and unharmed. He stated, “Allah has been very kind,” to underscore the fortunate outcome of the incident. Regarding security arrangements, Wani noted that it is too early for police to provide detailed comments and called for a thorough examination of the events that unfolded. The Jammu and Kashmir police have officially acknowledged the life-threatening attempt made against Farooq Abdullah and revealed that immediate actions by NSG personnel were crucial in averting what could have been a major crisis.

Action Taken by Law Enforcement

The police reported that the firearm used in the attack has been seized from the suspect’s possession, and an investigation into the motives behind the attack is underway. The accused, identified as Kamal Singh, is being interrogated to ascertain further details surrounding the incident. Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, who was also present during the incident, raised questions regarding potential security lapses, highlighting concerns that an individual armed with a gun could manage to get so close to a protected figure.

Following the incident, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for the Jammu zone visited Gangyal Police Station, where the assailant is being held.
