The Assam government has initiated a responsive and coordinated approach to address the flood crisis resulting from severe monsoon rainfall across various districts in the state, according to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Assam spokesperson Mita Nath Bora. She highlighted that the floods were triggered by exceptionally heavy rainfall in upstream catchment areas, causing a significant rise in the water levels of the Brahmaputra River and its tributaries.

Reports from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicate that certain regions in Assam experienced extraordinarily heavy rainfall, with measurements ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm within a 24-hour period. Some areas recorded over 204.4 mm during the same timeframe, worsening the flood situation.

Bora emphasised that despite adverse weather conditions, the state government activated its disaster response mechanism, mobilising various departments and agencies to mitigate the impact of the floods effectively.

Government’s Response and Relief Measures

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has ordered ministers and Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) to stay in the affected areas to oversee crisis management efforts. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), along with district administrations and various disaster response teams, are working continuously to provide aid.

The Assam police, Fire and Emergency Services, and the Health Department are also operating around the clock to support the relief initiatives. According to the latest updates, the government has established 101 relief camps and distribution centres in affected districts, aimed at delivering essential services such as shelter, cooked meals, drinking water, and medical care.

As of now, approximately 9,606 individuals are seeking refuge in government-run relief camps, while over 34,905 people are receiving assistance through distribution centres or direct outreach programmes set up by the government. Medical teams have been deployed to ensure that the affected communities are supplied with essential medicines and sanitation facilities.

Focus on Health and Safety

The government has prioritised the health and safety of vulnerable populations, including women, children, senior citizens, and individuals with disabilities. Medical personnel are on-site to provide nutritional support and ensure clean drinking water is accessible to those in need.

Continuous monitoring of the situation is being undertaken through district-level control rooms. Local administrations maintain regular communication and coordination to maximise the effectiveness of ongoing relief efforts. In addition, rescue teams are actively engaged in emergency responses, assessing damage to homes, agricultural fields, roads, and public infrastructure.

Bora expressed sorrow over the reported loss of ten lives due to the floods and extended condolences to the families affected by this tragedy. Furthermore, the Assam government has requested assistance from the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force to be prepared for potential rescue and evacuation operations when required.
