Applied Materials Announces USD 5 Billion India Investment Over Next Decade

The CSR Journal Magazine

Global semiconductor equipment companies are significantly expanding their investments in India, with Applied Materials announcing a USD 5 billion commitment over the next decade and Lam Research planning to invest around Rs 10,000 crore to establish its first silicon component manufacturing facility in the country.

The announcements were made at SEMICON India 2026 in New Delhi, as major global semiconductor companies outlined plans to expand research, manufacturing capabilities, supply chains and talent development in India.

Applied Materials Unveils India Vision 2035

Prabhu Raja, President of the Semiconductor Products Group at Applied Materials, announced the company’s India Vision 2035, which will involve a USD 5 billion investment over the next 10 years.

The investment will focus on strengthening research and development in India, accelerating the domestic semiconductor ecosystem and developing talent for the industry’s future workforce.

“Today we are announcing Applied Materials India Vision 2035 – A USD 5 billion investment for the next decade to accelerate and integrate India’s semiconductor ecosystem into the global value chain…”

As part of its research and development expansion, Applied Materials plans to establish a 140-acre advanced semiconductor research park. The facility is expected to bring together cleanroom capabilities, engineering expertise and collaborative research and development involving customers and suppliers.

“Today, we are committing to a new 140-acre advanced semiconductor research park, bringing together cleanroom capabilities, engineering expertise, and collaborative R&D with customers and suppliers on one side. Second, accelerate the ecosystem in India. Inventions done here must scale globally,” Raja said.

India Supply Chain Capacity To Grow Tenfold

Applied Materials also plans to substantially expand its India-based supply chain as part of its long-term investment strategy.

The company aims to increase its India-based supply chain capacity tenfold by 2035, creating opportunities for domestic suppliers while also encouraging global suppliers to establish a presence in the country.

“By 2035, we aim to grow our India-based supply chain capacity 10 times, creating opportunities for Indian suppliers and bringing global suppliers here…” Raja said.

The investment is expected to support the company’s broader objective of integrating India more closely with the global semiconductor value chain while expanding research and industrial capabilities within the country.

Lam Research Plans Rs 10,000 Crore Facility

Lam Research is also planning a major expansion of its semiconductor manufacturing presence in India. Sesha Varadarajan, Chief Operating Officer of the company, said the industry is at a critical juncture as artificial intelligence drives a new wave of technological innovation and demand.

Outlining the company’s plans, Varadarajan said, “Lam Research plans to invest approximately Rs 10,000 crores in India to establish our first silicon component manufacturing facility…”

The proposed facility would mark Lam Research’s first silicon component manufacturing facility in India, adding another major investment by a global semiconductor equipment company to the country’s growing semiconductor ecosystem.

ASML Highlights Opportunity Beyond Chip Manufacturing

Wayne Allan, Executive Vice President of ASML Holding, also highlighted the importance of long-term strategic partnerships in developing India’s semiconductor ecosystem.

Allan said India’s potential in the sector extends beyond chip manufacturing, pointing to opportunities for the country to play a larger role in the global semiconductor industry.

“…India’s opportunity also extends beyond chip manufacturing, under the right conditions, India will become increasingly important globally…” he said.

The investments and expansion plans announced at SEMICON India 2026 underline the growing participation of global semiconductor equipment companies in India, with research and development, manufacturing, supply chains and talent emerging as key areas of focus.
