Apple has Rolled out Critical Security Updates for Older Devices like the iPhone 6s and 7

The CSR Journal Magazine

Apple has issued a significant software update for several older devices, including the iPhone 6s and iPhone 7. This update is part of a response to recent findings by Google and iVerify regarding a sophisticated exploit kit named Coruna, which poses security risks to these devices. The latest update incorporates critical security enhancements for devices that cannot support newer versions of iOS, specifically iOS 16.7.15, iOS 15.8.7, iPadOS 16.7.15, and iPadOS 15.8.7.

Details on the Coruna Exploit Kit

Last week, security experts highlighted the Coruna kit, which exploits a total of 23 vulnerabilities through various attack methods targeting older iOS versions. One of the primary concerns is that attackers can potentially access these devices by tricking users into opening malicious web pages or links. This process exploits weaknesses in Apple’s WebKit browser engine and the core operating system components.

Security Enhancements in the New Update

Apple has confirmed that the latest updates address vulnerabilities mainly found in the kernel, the operating system’s core component, and WebKit, which serves as the web engine for Safari and other applications. These improvements were already present in newer iOS versions, and the current update retroactively applies these fixes to older devices. This proactive measure aims to enhance device security, ensuring they are less susceptible to attacks from the Coruna toolkit.

Devices Receiving the Update

The devices impacted by this update include the iPhone 6s, released in 2015, the iPhone 7 from 2016, the iPhone 8, iPhone X, as well as the first-generation iPhone SE. Older iPads such as the iPad mini 4 and the first-generation iPad Pro, both launched in 2015, are also receiving this update. Notably, Apple typically provides major iOS updates for about five to six years, making this continued support for devices like the iPhone 6s and iPhone 7 noteworthy, considering they are now over ten years old.

Additional Software Enhancements for Recent Models

Alongside the security-focused update, Apple has also released a smaller update, designated as iOS 26.3.1 and iPadOS 26.3.1, for its newer operating systems. This update primarily focuses on bug fixes and various system improvements. Additionally, it introduces support for new hardware, including the latest Apple Studio Display and Studio Display XDR monitors, as specified in Apple’s release notes. Although this update does not bring significant new features, it aims to enhance the overall stability and performance of compatible iPhones and iPads.

How to Access the Update

Users can easily download the update over-the-air through the Settings application on their devices. To access it, they need to navigate to the General section and select Software Update. This process allows users to ensure their devices remain secure and up to date with the latest enhancements from Apple.
