Amit Shah Asserts Hindu Refugees’ Citizenship Rights in Haridwar

The CSR Journal Magazine

On March 7, Union Home Minister Amit Shah declared that 200 refugees from Afghanistan and Pakistan have been granted Indian citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Speaking at the “Jan-Jan Ki Sarkar: Char Saal Bemisaal” event in Haridwar, Shah emphasized that Hindu refugees possess equal rights in India, akin to that of the Prime Minister. He criticized opposition parties, including the Congress, Samajwadi Party (SP), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Trinamool Congress, and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), for their resistance to the CAA.

Challenge to Opposition Leaders

During his address, Shah specifically addressed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, asserting that citizenship will be granted to eligible individuals regardless of opposition. He stated, “Rahul Baba, no matter how much you protest against it, we will grant citizenship to such people.” Shah criticized what he termed “appeasement politics” for hindering the rights of Hindu refugees from these neighboring countries.

Reforming the Justice System

Shah pointed out improvements in the Indian justice system since the colonial period, highlighting the abolition of outdated laws in favor of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). He projected that by the year 2028, all legal reforms would be fully implemented. His remarks alluded to a significant evolution in the legislative framework aimed at enhancing citizen rights.

Uttarakhand’s Identity Struggles

Reflecting on Uttarakhand’s journey for identity, Shah commended the youth who mobilized for the state’s culture and rights. He noted that past political actions by the Congress and the Samajwadi Party undermined efforts to establish a distinct identity during the statehood movement. He stated, “At that time, the Congress and the Samajwadi Party suppressed the youth of the state. The then BJP ministers and PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee worked to create Uttarakhand.”

Celebrating Four Years of the Dhami Government

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami welcomed Amit Shah at the event, marking the four-year anniversary of the Dhami administration concurrent with the nine years of BJP governance in the state. During the ceremony, the Chief Minister presented the Union Home Minister with a memento and honored him with a traditional cap that symbolizes Uttarakhand’s rich cultural heritage.
