AIIMS Advances Milk-Protein Tablet Development for Dry Eye Treatment

Researchers at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi are making strides towards the commercialisation of a tablet made from milk protein, aimed at treating dry eye disease. This condition is becoming increasingly prevalent across various age demographics. The tablet utilises lactoferrin, an iron-binding protein derived from cow colostrum, which has shown promising results in clinical trials.

Clinical trials conducted at AIIMS focused on patients who experienced acute dry eye symptoms following eye surgery. Results indicated significant improvements in tear production and quality after three months of treatment. Dr Sujata Sharma, a structural biologist and co-leader of the project, stated that a collaborative effort with a Japanese firm is underway to further develop the lactoferrin-based tablets. A research paper outlining these clinical findings is currently undergoing peer review for publication.

Understanding Dry Eye Disease

Dry eye disease manifests when tears fail to adequately lubricate the eyes, resulting in discomfort and potential damage to the ocular surface. This condition can arise from either a deficiency in tear production or poor tear quality, often leading to symptoms such as irritation, redness, and strain.

Dr Sharma highlighted prolonged screen usage as a significant contributor to dry eye disease, as it can diminish blinking frequency by over fifty per cent, increasing the risk of digital eye strain. Additionally, individuals undergoing ocular surgeries, such as cataract or LASIK procedures, are particularly susceptible to post-operative dry eye complications.

Current treatment options primarily involve the use of lubricating eye drops, which provide only temporary relief. Although some patients may be prescribed steroids, these treatments can carry unwanted side effects. In contrast, early trials indicate that the lactoferrin-based therapy demonstrates a strong safety profile and efficacy.

Benefits and Applications of Lactoferrin

Lactoferrin, a naturally occurring protein, is known for its immune-supporting properties, its capacity to facilitate healing, and its ability to reduce oxidative stress. This compound is present in various biological fluids, including tears and milk. Its prevalence in mammalian milk makes it a particularly valuable resource for therapeutic applications.

Despite initial investigations into sourcing lactoferrin from human breast milk, researchers determined that this approach was not viable due to limited supplies and ethical considerations. Cow colostrum was subsequently recognised as an effective and accessible alternative for lactoferrin extraction.

Researchers at AIIMS are also exploring additional therapeutic uses for lactoferrin, particularly its potential in addressing anaemia, a widespread issue among Indian women and adolescent girls. The success of the lactoferrin-based dry eye treatment has fostered optimism among scientists regarding future developments.

Future Prospects of the Treatment

Looking ahead, the AIIMS team is hopeful that the new lactoferrin-based treatment will soon become available to the public, pending necessary regulatory approvals and collaborations with industry partners. The promising results of the clinical trials have laid a strong foundation for further research and development in this area.
