The CSR Journal Magazine

Two minors tragically lost their lives, and their parents are in critical condition following the consumption of dosa made from fermented batter in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The incident is reported to have occurred on April 1, 2026.

According to family sources, the batter, known as khiru, was purchased by Vimal, the father, from a local dairy shop named Ghanashyam Dairy. The family began showing symptoms of severe illness the following morning, which included vomiting, necessitating their immediate hospitalisation.

Emergency medical intervention took place as the family’s health deteriorated. Vimal and his wife Bhavna, along with their two daughters, were admitted to a local medical facility for urgent care.

Children’s Fatalities

The situation turned dire when their three-month-old daughter died on April 3, followed by the death of their four-year-old daughter on April 5. The heartbreaking sequence of events has left the family in a state of profound distress.

Presently, both parents remain in critical condition under medical supervision. Their condition continues to be monitored closely by healthcare professionals as investigations into the incident progress.

As a response to the unfortunate occurrences, local authorities have initiated an inquiry. Family members have lodged a complaint with the police, prompting an investigation into the matter to determine the circumstances that led to this tragedy.

Investigations and Response

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has taken proactive steps in the ongoing investigation. Samples of the khiru purchased from Ghanashyam Dairy have been collected and sent to the Food and Security Laboratory (FSL) for analysis. This testing aims to ascertain the quality and safety of the product consumed by the family.

A senior police officer confirmed that the exact cause of death has yet to be determined, as the post-mortem reports are still pending. Authorities are awaiting findings that could provide clarity and accountability in this distressing case.

The owner of Ghanashyam Dairy, Ghanashyam Shah, has stated that he sells khiru daily to numerous customers, claiming no complaints have been received thus far. On the day of the incident, he reported selling roughly 100 kilograms of batter with no subsequent issues reported from other customers who purchased the same product.

Following the tragedy, Shah attempted to reach out to several customers who had bought khiru to check if they experienced any adverse effects. According to his accounts, none reported experiencing problems associated with consuming the batter.

The municipality’s records indicate that the family purchased three kilograms of khiru, but only a small portion, approximately 300 grams, was used to prepare the dosa. This detail may be relevant as investigations continue into the context surrounding the illness.
