Afghanistan to Visit India for Test and ODI Series in June 2026

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed on Monday that Afghanistan will be touring India in June 2026. The itinerary includes a one-off Test followed by a three-match One-Day International (ODI) series. The Test match is scheduled to take place in New Chandigarh from June 6 to June 10, with the first ball set to be bowled at 9:30 AM IST. After the Test, the teams will compete in the ODI format, starting with the first ODI on June 14 in Dharamshala.

Details of the ODI Matches

The second ODI will occur in Lucknow on June 17, while the series will conclude with the third ODI in Chennai on June 20. Each of the one-day matches is set to commence at 1:30 PM IST. This series represents an opportunity for Afghanistan to engage with India across various formats of the game.

A Historical Perspective

The last occasion Afghanistan toured India was in June 2018, when they played a historic one-off Test match. This was notably their debut in the longest format of cricket following the awarding of Test status by the International Cricket Council in 2017. During that match, India achieved a comprehensive victory, winning by an innings and 262 runs in Bengaluru, completing the match within two days. In this historic match, Afghanistan was dismissed twice on the same day, marking only the fourth occurrence of such an event in Test history. This match also allowed India to record their largest innings win in Test cricket at that time, solidifying their status as the first Asian team to win a Test match in under two days.

Significance of the Upcoming Series

The forthcoming series in June 2026 serves as an important milestone for Afghanistan as they return to India for a bilateral red-ball fixture. This engagement aims to enhance competitive interactions between the two teams at the start of the international cricket calendar for 2026. Both cricketing nations will look forward to building on their previous encounters, fostering sporting relations, and engaging fans across India and Afghanistan.
