As Delhi proceeds to get its fourth female chief minister, Rekha Gupta, the former Delhi chief minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi is set to lead the opposition in the assembly. The party picked her name amongst the 22 MLAs who won the February 5 polls from various constituencies in Delhi. The decision came out of the party leaders’ meeting held on Sunday, which elected the first-ever woman to hold the position of the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Delhi assembly.

Atishi Elected Unopposed

The first session of the new assembly will begin today. AAP Delhi convenor Gopal Rai, who is also amongst the 22 successful MLAs, announced at a press conference on Sunday that Atishi’s name was proposed by Burari MLA Sanjeev Jha and was seconded by Kondli MLA Kuldeep Kumar and Tilak Nagar MLA Jarnail Singh. “Atishi was elected unopposed,” said Rai in a press conference.
“I thank Kejriwal and the MLAs for having faith in me. The people of Delhi have decided that we will sit in the opposition this time. There are two main things we will focus on, first is to ensure the promises made by the BJP are fulfilled, especially its promise to give ₹2500 per month to the Women of Delhi…..The second is to ensure, that the work that the AAP government started, does not stop or discontinue,” said Atishi.
