CSR News: Support for Flood-Affected Families in Barpeta and Dhubri Districts of Assam
Guwahati, India: Leading housing non-profit organisation Habitat for Humanity India has successfully concluded its disaster response initiative in Assam, providing essential relief to vulnerable families in Barpeta and Dhubri districts. Their efforts were supported by funding from Texas Instruments (TI) India, which went toward Emergency Shelter Kits (ESKs) for 329 flood-affected families. The kits will enable these families to repair and rebuild their homes and to restore a sense of stability.
The floods caused extensive damage to homes and people’s livelihoods, with many families continuing to live in vulnerable conditions. Habitat for Humanity India worked closely with local authorities and community leaders to identify and support families who were severely impacted.
“The shelter kit has been of great help to us. We did not have the means to buy them on our own. We used the tarpaulin sheet to protect our livestock during the rain and the wire and pliers to repair the bamboo walls of our home. Additionally, my son Deepak uses the handsaw as he works as a carpenter,” said Priyabala Mondal, who lives in Mandia block of Barpeta district of Assam.
The intervention focused on the communities living on the riverbanks in Barpeta and in the tea garden area in Dhubri, prioritising single women-led households, elderly individuals, children and marginalised families. The provision of Emergency Shelter Kits marks a significant step in aiding the recovery process for these communities.
Mr. Anand Kumar Bolimera, National Director, Habitat for Humanity India, said “Our goal through this initiative was to support families devastated by the floods due to Cyclone Remal. The shelter kits will enable them to have a temporary shelter until they repair and rebuild their houses and regain stability. With the support of Texas Instruments India, we have been able to provide not just essential tools but also a renewed sense of hope and possibility.”
“We are proud to support Habitat for Humanity India and its efforts to help flood-affected families,” said Aditya Salian, TI India’s CSR Manager. “Its focus on fostering resilience and sustainability aligns with our commitment to build stronger communities. It is our hope that the Emergency Shelter Kits will be a significant step in helping families rebuild and secure their homes, paving the way for a stronger and more resilient future.”
Each Emergency Shelter Kit was carefully curated to provide immediate relief and assistance. The kits included essential materials such as tarpaulin, rope, tie wire, pliers, a claw hammer, nails, washers, a hoe, a plastic sheet and a hand saw. These tools have enabled families to repair damaged roofs, secure walls and create safer living spaces, offering relief from the challenges posed by their damaged houses.
Habitat for Humanity India remains steadfast in its commitment to support communities affected by natural disasters. Habitat’s Pathways to Permanence strategy of disaster response places the affected families on a path to permanent shelter-based solutions with an aim to rebuild their lives and move them from ruin to recovery in incremental stages, for which these Emergency Shelter Kits are the stepping stones.
