In today’s business landscape, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has become a key aspect of a company’s operations. Google, one of the world’s tech giants, has shown a deep commitment to CSR through its philanthropic arm, Google.org. Over the past eight years, Google.org has invested a remarkable $50 million in Indian non-profits, with a focus on supporting initiatives related to artificial intelligence for social good and building a safer internet.
Google.org has a long-standing commitment to supporting positive change in India. Annie Lewin, Senior Director of Global Advocacy and Head of Asia Pacific at Google.org, announced this significant milestone in a recent blog post. She emphasised Google.org’s dedication to India’s changemakers and its continued investment in projects aligned with the organisation’s core values.

Wadhwani AI: Empowering Agriculture through AI

Wadhwani AI is a non-profit organisation dedicated to harnessing artificial intelligence for the betterment of society. With Google.org’s support, Wadhwani AI is on a mission to expand and integrate image-classifying artificial intelligence technology into the digital systems of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare in India. The primary goal is to cover staple food crops such as rice, wheat, and corn, enabling data-driven decisions to prevent crop loss.
The technology developed by Wadhwani AI leverages Natural Language Processing techniques to provide management advisories for pests and diseases nationwide. This innovation is expected to have a profound impact on India’s agriculture ecosystem, allowing farmers and stakeholders to make informed decisions. Shekar Sivasubramanian, CEO of Wadhwani AI, highlighted that the Cotton Ace app, supported by Google.org, has already improved farmers’ profits by 20% and reduced pesticide expenses by 25%. With the recent grant, Wadhwani AI aims to contribute to the United Nations’ goal of achieving zero hunger.
This investment showcases Google’s commitment to using technology for social good and its belief in the power of AI to address real-world problems.

CyberPeace Foundation: Promoting a Safer Internet

In addition to supporting agricultural advancements, Google.org has also extended its hand to the CyberPeace Foundation. This cybersecurity advocacy organisation is set to embark on a nationwide awareness and capacity-building initiative. With Google.org’s grant of $4 million, the CyberPeace Foundation aims to equip 40 million individuals across India with fact-checking techniques and guidelines for responsible online behaviour.
The initiative includes the development of a comprehensive online learning centre, offering resources in over 15 Indian languages. This project’s significance cannot be overstated in a world where misinformation and cyber threats are prevalent. Vineet Kumar, Founder of CyberPeace, expressed his gratitude for Google.org’s support and emphasised the role each individual plays in building a safe and inclusive online space.

Conclusion

Google’s CSR initiatives in India, channelled through Google.org, exemplify the tech giant’s commitment to making a positive impact on society. With a total investment of $50 million over eight years, Google.org is driving change in areas such as agriculture and internet safety. The support provided to organisations like Wadhwani AI and the CyberPeace Foundation demonstrates Google’s dedication to using its resources and technology for the betterment of Indian society. As Google continues its CSR efforts, it not only sets an example for other companies but also reinforces the idea that corporate entities can be catalysts for positive change in the communities they serve.
