Safe and Affordable housing is a primary concern for women’s safety. It is vital to ensure this in order to uplift their lives and empower them.
Habitat for Humanity International, Lowe’s and approximately 6,000 women volunteers will unite in more than 235 communities in the United States, India and Canada for International Women Build Week, March 1-8, to highlight the global need for safe and affordable housing. A prelude to International Women’s Day, the global event aims to build and improve 540 homes while raising awareness of housing issues facing women and their families.
In Bangalore, India, the build will take place on one day with over 100 volunteers from Lowe’s who will come together on the 6th of March to build houses for two families and partake in the renovation and refurbishing of 10 homes in the community. The area in Bagalur has around 150 houses and with families living in dilapidated homes with poor sanitation conditions. While the menfolk work in fields, the women work as housekeepers and most of the children go to the nearby Government School. Considering the above conditions Habitat for Humanity India, proposed to build houses in the community for these families.
Anyone above the age of 18 can participate in International Women Build Week by volunteering with their local Habitat organization or by joining the conversation.
“The need for housing in India is huge. Habitat India builds homes and provides access to improved sanitation for families from economically weaker sections of society. Women often power transformational change within their families. Through this build in partnership with Lowe’s, we also see great transformation as women cross barriers of community and socio-economic status to join hands and build a better future together.” Rajan Samuel, Managing Director, Habitat for Humanity India
Habitat for Humanity and Lowe’s are calling on women across the world to help bring attention to this important issue by raising a hammer with their local chapter. The Lowe’s has committed more than $71.1 million to support the nonprofit. Its longstanding support of Habitat has helped more than 6,500 Habitat partner families improve their living conditions.
