Tear Gas Used Against Factory Workers in Noida Demanding Higher Wages

The CSR Journal Magazine

A factory workers’ demonstration in Noida, located in the suburbs of India’s national capital, turned chaotic as police resorted to tear gas to disperse crowds on April 13, 2026. The protest entered its fourth consecutive day, escalating in intensity, resulting in vehicles being set ablaze and stones being thrown in various areas of the satellite city.

Local authorities stated that a strategy of “minimum force” was implemented to restore order. Officials from the Gautam Budh Nagar police emphasised their ongoing efforts to engage with workers and encourage peaceful dialogue regarding their grievances.

Visual media coverage depicted numerous protesters marching while chanting slogans, with law enforcement present in full anti-riot gear. Images also revealed an overturned vehicle engulfed in flames amidst the unrest, along with demonstrators attempting to breach police barricades.

Workers’ Demands Amid Rising Living Costs

The protests in Noida are part of a broader context of surging living expenses globally, which have been influenced by the US-Israel conflict with Iran, impacting fuel supplies. Workers are reportedly seeking increased wages to keep pace with rising costs of living.

Last week, participants in similar protests in the neighbouring state of Haryana witnessed government action resulting in a 35 per cent increase in minimum wages at various manufacturing units, underlining the gravity of the workers’ demands across the region.

One protester, Vinay Mahoti, a hosiery factory employee originally from Bihar, outlined his concerns while expressing solidarity with workers from different companies. He articulated specific demands, including fixed duty hours, payment for overtime, and adherence to federal guidelines by employers.

Impact on Industrial Activity in the Region

Noida, recognised as one of Asia’s largest planned industrial hubs, accommodates thousands of manufacturing entities. The unrest has raised concerns about the impact on local industries and the broader economic implications of the protests.

Authorities have been closely monitoring the situation, aiming to defuse tensions while facilitating discussions between the workers and the government. The police’s approach has been one of caution, prioritising de-escalation of the situation to prevent further violence.

With law enforcement’s call for peaceful demonstration, the future of protests in Noida remains uncertain as workers continue to advocate for their rights amid a challenging economic environment. Their actions reflect a growing discontent that may lead to intensified dialogue on labour issues in the coming days.
