The Delhi Government has initiated a programme aimed at enhancing the accessibility of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) for migrant labourers. In a pivotal decision, the Government of India has approved a 100 per cent increase in the allocation of 5 kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinders specifically for migrant workers. This allocation adjustment will support the significant population of migrant labourers residing in Delhi.
As part of this initiative, the daily availability of 5 kg FTL cylinders has been raised from 684 to 1,368 units. This decision aims to improve the distribution and access to LPG for these workers, as reported by the Chief Minister’s Office. The enhanced allocation is intended to ensure that migrant labourers can obtain essential cooking fuel more reliably.
The government is also taking proactive measures to facilitate the last-mile delivery of these cylinders. District Magistrates have been instructed to set up Special Camps in locations with high concentrations of migrant workers. This approach is designed to streamline the requisition process for those experiencing difficulties in accessing LPG cylinders.
Efforts to Support Last-Mile Delivery
The Special Camps are being organised in conjunction with Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) to guarantee that eligible migrant workers can conveniently obtain 5 kg FTL cylinders. Migrant workers can approach the District Magistrate’s office to request that camps be established in their areas. The process involves presenting Aadhaar as identity proof along with payment to receive the cylinders.
To further support the initiative, District Enforcement Teams will undertake demand assessments and oversee the distribution process. This oversight is aimed at ensuring that the delivery of LPG is conducted in an orderly and transparent manner. The government has reiterated the importance of an efficient distribution system to deliver essential cooking fuel to those in need.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office, these efforts are geared towards fortifying the last-mile delivery framework, thus improving accessibility and ensuring the timely availability of LPG for all migrant workers across Delhi. By focusing on these aspects, the government hopes to make a substantial impact on the living conditions of migrant labourers.
Ministry of Petroleum Assures Fuel Supply is Stable
During this inter-ministerial briefing, Sujata Sharma, the General Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, noted that the distribution of commercial LPG has been managed carefully to ensure that domestic consumers receive priority. Current statistics indicate that over 95 per cent of LPG cylinder bookings are made online, and 91 per cent of refill deliveries are achieved through the Delivery Authentication Code. This indicates no reported diversion in deliveries.
Since the introduction of various government initiatives, approximately 17,000 LPG cylinders have been surrendered as more consumers have been encouraged to shift to piped natural gas connections. The General Secretary also mentioned that since March 2026, around 3,87,000 new Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections have been issued, with roughly 4,21,000 new consumers registered for these connections.
