A group of students reportedly abducted their classmate in Bengaluru as part of a scheme to fund an extravagant lifestyle. The incident was swiftly addressed by local police, who intervened within a few hours of the crime. The victim, identified as Mohanty, is a student from Odisha, while the alleged perpetrators hail from various regions including Bihar, Jamshedpur, Kerala, and Bengaluru.

According to police accounts, the assailants lured Mohanty out of his hostel, coerced him into a vehicle, and subsequently took him to one of their rooms. Once there, they contacted his friends and demanded a ransom of Rs 50,000 for his release, indicating a planned effort to extract money from their peer.

In response to the ransom request, Mohanty’s friends managed to transfer Rs 10,000. They also quickly alerted law enforcement by calling 112. The police acted expeditiously, utilising location tracking to trace the accused and rescue the victim within a short time frame.

Police Investigation and Arrests

The Madiwala police undertook a dramatic operation to apprehend the suspects, managing to arrest all four individuals involved within two hours of receiving the distress call. Police officials have detailed that a fake metal gun and a knife were recovered, along with the vehicle used in the commission of the crime.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) South East, Mohammad Sujeetha M.S., stated that the victim was initially thought to have been kidnapped by unidentified attackers. However, further investigation led them to believe that the suspects were known to Mohanty, as they attended the same college. This connection added complexity to the case, highlighting the betrayal by peers.

The DCP informed that there were four individuals involved in the kidnapping, confirming that the motive was clearly ransom-driven. An FIR has been lodged, and the investigation is ongoing. Authorities are also evaluating whether the accused have participated in similar incidents in the past.
