Pakistani Forces Enforce Strict Lockdown in Balochistan’s Noshki

The CSR Journal Magazine

Pakistani security forces have enforced strict restrictions on civilian movement in the Noshki district of Balochistan. Reports from The Balochistan Post indicate that authorities have initiated a security lockdown in the city, effectively curtailing daily life and restricting entry and exit routes.

On April 13, multiple checkpoints were established, preventing residents from travelling in and out of the area. Local reports suggest that a noticeable increase in the number of security personnel was observed early in the morning at essential locations, including Noshki Bazaar, Qaziabad, Grid Station, and Ghareebabad.

Residents indicated that the overwhelming presence of security forces created an atmosphere akin to a complete siege. The lockdown has substantially limited civilian activities, including the closure of local markets.

Recent Military Operations Linked to Current Lockdown

This heightened security measure follows a military operation conducted in Killi Qadirabad on April 12. During this operation, Pakistani forces reportedly cordoned off the area for several hours, with residents claiming to have heard gunfire, although no official statement has confirmed these reports.

During the operation, two individuals identified as Abid Mengal, son of Noor Mohammad Mengal, and Tahir Khan, son of Mohammad Rahim Jan Badini, were detained and allegedly taken to an undisclosed location. There has been no official commentary from authorities regarding the detentions or the broader military actions in the region.

For the past two months, Noshki has been under partial curfew restrictions with local markets required to close during the evening. These markets are permitted to reopen after 9:00 am, while movement during nighttime hours is still limited.

Ongoing Concerns About Human Rights Violations

The situation in Balochistan raises critical human rights issues, especially concerning enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings. Local families frequently endure lengthy searches for missing relatives, while activists accuse security agencies of unlawful detentions and orchestrated encounters.

Despite ongoing protests and reports generated by human rights organisations, there appears to be minimal accountability for these actions. The persistence of unresolved cases contributes to a climate of fear and resentment, deepening mistrust between the state and the Baloch population.

As tensions continue to escalate in the region, security measures, alongside the impact of military operations, have exacerbated the local populace’s concerns regarding safety and security. The complexities surrounding these events underscore a volatile environment in Balochistan that is characterised by ongoing human rights challenges.
