Madhya Pradesh CM Mohan Yadav Criticises Congress Following Councillor’s Refusal to Sing ‘Vande Mataram’

The CSR Journal Magazine

A political controversy has emerged in Madhya Pradesh after a Congress councillor reportedly declined to sing ‘Vande Mataram’ during a session of the Indore Municipal Corporation. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav responded strongly to the incident, expressing his disappointment and calling for action against the councillor’s behaviour. He emphasised that such an act reflects poorly on the party’s representatives and added that the Congress leadership should be held accountable.

The incident occurred on April 8, 2025, during a discussion regarding the municipal budget. Opposition councillors from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) requested the Congress councillor, Fauzia Sheikh Alim, to participate in singing the national song, to which she allegedly refused. This refusal led to a heated exchange among councillors, with BJP members vocally expressing their disapproval and demanding accountability.

Chief Minister’s Demands for Accountability

Yadav expressed that the refusal to sing ‘Vande Mataram’ is indicative of a larger issue within the party, stating that this incident dishonours the sacrifices made by those who fought for India’s independence. He called for a reassessment of the attitudes within the Congress party towards issues related to national identity and patriotism.

He further asserted that Jitu Patwari must provide an explanation regarding the incident, particularly as it took place in his own district, which added additional weight to the request for an official acknowledgement of the event.

Congress Councillor’s Suspension and Response

Following the uproar, Chairman Munnalal Yadav decided to suspend Fauzia Sheikh Alim from the proceedings for one day due to her refusal to participate in the singing. The suspension has raised questions about internal party discipline within the Congress, as BJP councillors argue that actions must have consequences to uphold the integrity of municipal operations.

Reports indicate that the BJP has seized upon this incident to criticise the Congress party’s commitment to national symbols and values. They argue that the refusal to sing ‘Vande Mataram’ constitutes a disregard for the nation’s ethos. Congress leaders have been urged to respond promptly to counter the narrative that they do not support patriotic expressions.

In the context of this incident, the Chief Minister highlighted the contrast between current leadership and historical events, suggesting that the Congress party’s past compromises on national sentiments continue to influence its present behaviour. The Chief Minister concluded his remarks by calling for stringent actions against members displaying such attitudes to prevent further misunderstandings regarding patriotism in public settings.
