A three-and-a-half-year-old Labrador named ‘Check’, part of the Anand district police dog unit, has garnered acclaim for the Gujarat Police by clinching one gold and one bronze medal at the 69th All India Police Duty Meet Championship 2025-26. The event took place in Nagpur, Maharashtra.

This year’s championship, which ran from March to April 2026, showcased police K9 teams, forensic specialists, and personnel from across India. Various events included disciplines such as explosive and narcotic detection, tracking, agility, and obedience, highlighting the commitment of trained canines.

Bringing pride to the Gujarat Police, this achievement marks the first time in 16 years that a state police dog has won two medals at this national-level event.

Event Details and Performance

On February 1, 2025, Director General of Police (DGP) KLN Rao met with Check, his handler Ramesh Khant, and dog training consultant Colonel Chandan Singh Rathore at Police Bhavan in Gandhinagar. They received congratulations for their exceptional accomplishment.

According to police reports, six dogs from the Gujarat Police participated in the competition, with two dogs representing each category: tracking, explosive detection, and narcotics detection. Check secured a gold medal in the tracking category and also won a bronze medal in the overall tracking performance.

“Check’s success in the tracking event is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Gujarat Police. This is a significant achievement for our team,” stated Colonel Chandan Singh Rathore, highlighting the rigorous efforts taken to prepare for the championships.

Preparation and Participation

A total of 45 dogs from various state police and paramilitary forces competed in the tracking category, of which Check emerged as the gold medallist. Overall, more than 200 dogs participated across different categories during the championship.

Prior to the national competition, the Gujarat Police initiated preparations well in advance. Under the guidance of DGP (Training) Neerja Gotru, a special state-level competition was organised for police dogs to ensure that they were adequately prepared for the national championship.

Police officials noted that nine dogs were shortlisted for the national event. Among these, six dogs were selected to compete in various categories, showcasing their advanced training and capabilities.

Currently, there are approximately 160 trained police dogs deployed across various districts. They assist in investigations that include explosive detection, narcotic detection, crime tracking, alcohol detection, and even during interventions in assault operations.
