Haryana Women’s Commission Raises Alarm Over Gun Culture and Abusive Lyrics, Writes to CM

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Haryana State Commission for Women has communicated its concerns to Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini regarding the prevalence of gun culture and aggressive content in music. The letter, dated April 9, addresses the issues that this kind of material allegedly poses to youth, especially to school students.

Renu Bhatia, Chairperson of the Commission, highlights a recent controversy involving the song “Tatteri,” performed by a popular rapper. She notes that this particular song has drawn considerable attention across the state, raising serious questions about its impact on the reputation and dignity of school-going girls.

The Commission has expressed that the increasing proliferation of abusive language and the glorification of violence in songs are matters of significant concern. Bhatia stressed that these trends could have deleterious effects on young impressionable minds.

Impact on Youth and Society

The controversy surrounding “Tatteri” has prompted outrage, as the content reportedly undermines the standing of young women in society. Bhatia stated that this disrespectful portrayal could create unhealthy perceptions and attitudes among the youth, thereby adversely affecting societal norms.

Furthermore, the Commission’s letter noted that while significant strides have been made in empowering women through various governmental initiatives, such as the 33 per cent reservation for women and campaigns like “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao,” the negative influence of music promoting derogatory content contradicts these efforts.

The message conveyed underscores the urgent need for society to collectively address these harmful trends. By addressing the impacts of such music on youth, the Commission aims to promote a healthier, more respectful environment.

Call for Regulatory Measures

In the letter, the Commission has implored the Chief Minister to take stringent action against the creators of content that promote harmful themes. Bhatia specifically called for the introduction of strict guidelines, monitoring mechanisms, and legislative measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Moreover, the Chairperson has suggested that the government spearhead awareness campaigns to educate young people about the negative influences of inappropriate music and media. According to the Commission, these campaigns could be pivotal in cultivating a more informed and conscious youth populace.

In conclusion, the Haryana Women’s Commission urged the state government to prioritise this issue, reinforcing the necessity to undertake actions that uphold the dignity of individuals and foster a conducive atmosphere for the younger generation. The Commission seeks to ensure that such concerns are treated with the seriousness they demand, contributing positively to societal norms.
