Nitin Nabin Chairs BJP Meeting on Women’s Reservation Bill

The CSR Journal Magazine

Nitin Nabin, the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is presiding over a crucial meeting at the party’s headquarters extension in New Delhi. This gathering, which took place on April 10, aims to bring together state presidents and in-charges from various regions of India. The main objective of this meeting is to formulate a comprehensive plan regarding the Women’s Reservation Bill.

The discussions are centred on organising outreach initiatives across the states to foster awareness and garner support for the impending implementation of the Nari Shakti Vandan Act. This legislative initiative is viewed as a significant step towards increasing female representation in India’s political landscape.

Women’s Reservation Bill and Legislative Changes

The meeting comes ahead of the Central Government’s proposal to introduce amendments to the Nari Shakti Vandan Act during a special session of Parliament scheduled to last for three days from April 16, 2025. These proposed legislative changes are particularly aimed at separating women’s reservation from the ongoing census and delimitation processes, utilising the data from the 2011 Census to expedite its implementation.

Should these amendments be approved, they could potentially expand the Lok Sabha’s membership from the current 543 seats to approximately 816 seats. Of these, nearly one-third, equating to around 273 seats, would be reserved specifically for women. Furthermore, a separate Delimitation Bill is anticipated to be introduced alongside the Women’s Reservation Bill, with both requiring approval as constitutional amendments.

While reservations for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes will remain in place, there is currently no provision for reservations for Other Backward Classes (OBC) within this framework. This aspect has raised questions about the inclusivity of the proposal moving forward.

Political Responses and Outreach Initiatives

In addition to the legislative focus, the BJP has intensified its outreach initiatives through programmes like “Mahila Samvad.” This initiative aims to directly engage women in both urban and rural settings, serving as a platform to raise awareness regarding the Women’s Reservation Bill and to gather feedback from citizens about the legislation.

Prime Minister Modi has hailed the Women’s Reservation Bill as a landmark development in empowering “Nari Shakti,” which translates to women’s strength, thereby promoting greater participation of women in India’s democratic processes. The concerted efforts leading up to the special Parliament session signify the government’s commitment to advancing women’s representation in politics.
