Surge In Enforced Disappearances Raise Concerns Over Human Rights Violations in Balochistan And Karachi

The CSR Journal Magazine

A significant increase in reported enforced disappearances in Balochistan and Karachi has heightened concerns regarding human rights practices in Pakistan. Families and local sources have indicated that numerous individuals have allegedly been detained by Pakistani security forces, rendering them untraceable. This troubling trend aligns with an ongoing situation in the region, as highlighted by The Balochistan Post.

Details Of Recent Detentions

On April 5, two teenage boys were reportedly apprehended in the Paroom area of Panjgur district. The missing individuals are a 17-year-old and 18-year-old Marwan, son of Hamza, both residents of Shaptaan. Local accounts suggest that personnel from the Frontier Corps (FC) took them into custody around 5 PM, transporting them to an unknown location. Since their detention, families have reportedly been in the dark regarding their whereabouts.

Furthermore, over 25 individuals were allegedly detained during a series of operations in Surab district by Pakistani forces. The identities of those arrested remain uncertain, leading to increased apprehension among residents in the area. Accounts from locals indicate that officials instructed nearby residents to evacuate their homes close to an FC camp, warning of dire consequences for non-compliance.

In Karachi, there are reports concerning a young man identified as Sultan Saeed, who was allegedly taken into custody from Gul Mohammad Lane. His family claims he was apprehended by security personnel and subsequently moved to an undisclosed facility. Notably, Saeed had previously gone missing in January 2021, remaining unaccounted for nearly two years before reappearing, as reported by The Balochistan Post.

Lack Of Official Response

The Balochistan Post highlighted that there has been no immediate official response to these recent allegations of enforced disappearances. The ongoing situation has further added to the growing list of similar cases from Balochistan, where human rights organisations have raised alarms over such incidents consistently.

These organisations have urged Pakistani authorities to provide transparency regarding arrests, uphold due process, and consider the concerns voiced by families of the missing persons. The increase in disappearances has led to significant unease within local communities, where families live in constant fear of the unknown.

Local residents have expressed their frustrations and fears, stressing the need for accountability and justice for the affected families. The lack of communication from authorities only compounds the distress experienced by those left searching for their loved ones, who remain untraceable despite the families’ desperate inquiries.
