CBSE Mandates Implementation of Three Language Formula in Schools Within Seven Days

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has made it mandatory for Class 6 students to study a third language from the academic session of 2026-27. In a recent circular, the board instructed all affiliated schools to implement this change urgently, with a strict deadline of seven days from the date of notification. The requirement aims to enhance multilingual learning across schools affiliated with CBSE.

As per the guideline, several schools have reportedly already begun implementing the new language structure, while others are required to expedite their preparations. The board emphasised that compliance is crucial and should not be delayed, as it aligns with contemporary educational frameworks promoting language diversity.

Details of the Language Structure

The new scheme stipulates that students from Class 6 will be learning three languages, categorized as R1, R2, and R3. Typically, R1 is designated as a regional or mother tongue, R2 is often a common language such as Hindi or English, and R3 would be an additional language, which could either be another Indian language or a foreign one depending on the school’s offerings.

Under this revised framework, the selected language for R3 must remain consistent through to higher classes, including Classes 9 and 10. This continuity highlights the importance for schools to make informed decisions regarding the language options available, as they will have lasting implications on students’ educational pathways.

The board has reaffirmed that the choice of the R3 language in Class 6 will be critical, as it not only affects immediate language learning but will also influence students’ academic performance in subsequent years. Thoughtful selection is therefore advised, given its long-term effects.

Implementation Without Textbooks

One noteworthy aspect of the CBSE directive is that schools are expected to commence teaching the third language without having to wait for the official textbooks to become available. The board has indicated that textbooks for R3 languages, as recognised in the Constitution, will be issued imminently.

In the interim period, schools are encouraged to utilise locally accessible books and other educational materials to facilitate the teaching process. According to the circular, the competencies outlined in the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE) 2023 must continue to be adhered to during instruction.

Affiliated schools have received explicit instructions to begin integrating R3 immediately. This directive includes ensuring that the language choice is communicated to their respective CBSE Regional Office and that details are updated on the OASIS portal. Furthermore, local materials should be employed until the formal textbooks arrive at the schools.

The introduction of a third language starting in Class 6 is expected to bring about significant changes in students’ academic experience. This will likely require students to pass all language subjects as per the educational schemes adopted by their respective institutions.
