Encephalitis Scare in Rajasthan: 5 Children Dead in Salumbar, Health Alert Issued

The CSR Journal Magazine

A suspected Encephalitis (a critical condition involving inflammation of the brain) outbreak has occurred in Rajasthan. Five young children have died in the tribal belt of Salumbar district. Emergency health measures have been launched; an investigation is underway to confirm the cause of deaths and prevent further spread.

The outbreak has occurred in Ghata and Lalpura villages of the Lasadiya block, Salumber district. Children who died were between the ages of two and four, and each had similar symptoms, which increased suspicion of an outbreak.

What symptoms pointed toward the infection

All the children who died in Salumbar district had common symptoms such as vomiting, unconsciousness, and an altered mental state. Such symptoms are directly linked to inflammation of the brain, a condition that escalates easily in children. Muhammad Junaid, Collector of Salumbar district, said the symptoms point toward viral encephalitis, however confirmation from lab tests is awaited. Junaid noted that samples have been sent to the National Institute of Virology for testing.

Another suspected virus is Chandipura virus, which has caused encephalitis outbreaks in many parts of India in the past. It is most commonly transmitted through sandflies and is dangerous for children. Although there is no confirmation yet, an alert has been issued and health officials are vigilant.

What preventive measures is the State Health Department taking?

Health department has initiated door-to-door health surveys, medical screening of children, deployment of rapid response teams and public awareness campaigns. Focus is on sanitation and vector control to prevent further spread. This virus is considered dangerous because it causes brain inflammation, and if not treated properly, it leads to complications or death. The common early symptoms are high fever, severe headache, vomiting, confusion or disorientation and seizures or loss of consciousness.

The risk of spread can be prevented by these simple measures. Protection against insects requires wearing full-sleeved clothing, using insect repellents, and utilizing window screens and fans.

Removal of breeding grounds for insects and flies is essential; stagnant water should be removed from surroundings, and containers and garbage areas must be kept clean and dry. With the ongoing investigation, health officials are requesting that people immediately seek medical help if symptoms appear.
