“Southern Lebanon Will Be Cleaned of Hezbollah Terrorist Infrastructure”: Israel Ambassador Reuven Azar

The CSR Journal Magazine

Israel’s Ambassador to India, Reuven Azar, stated that the nation is focused on eliminating Hezbollah’s militant infrastructure located in Southern Lebanon. In an interview, Azar underscored that Israel’s operations in Lebanon are separate from its engagements with Iran, particularly in light of recent ceasefire talks involving Tehran. He asserted, “Our aim is to achieve a situation in which southern Lebanon will be cleansed of Hezbollah’s terrorist assets. This responsibility lies with the Lebanese government.”

Azar further explicated that Israel has a right to defend itself against Hezbollah’s threats from its northern border. Recent military actions have led to significant advancements, with reports indicating that Israeli airstrikes have targeted Hezbollah positions across Lebanon, resulting in the removal of over 250 Hezbollah militants. He emphasized that the ceasefire terms established last year must be upheld, stating that Hezbollah must be disarmed and prevented from operating south of the Litani River.

Ceasefire and Negotiations with Iran

On the matter of negotiations with Iran, Ambassador Azar expressed cautious optimism that these discussions could alleviate what he termed as two significant threats: Iran’s nuclear program and its ballistic missile capabilities. He noted Israel’s official support for the current ceasefire, which is being mediated by the United States, and described ongoing dialogues as a positive development. “The framework of the negotiations is based on a 15-point plan advocated by the United States,” he remarked.

Azar mentioned that during the ceasefire negotiations, Iran has committed to halting efforts that disrupt international trade routes, framing these discussions as pivotal in steering the region toward lasting peace. He conveyed hope that the Iranian regime might reconsider its stance following the weakening of its military capabilities.

Regional Tensions and Statements from Iran

In response to Israel’s actions, Iranian officials have attributed the country’s military operations to undermining the fragile ceasefire established between the US and Iran. They warned that continued assaults by Israel on Lebanese territories could jeopardize the cessation of hostilities and potentially elevate tensions in strategic areas like the Strait of Hormuz. US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have clarified that Lebanon is not included in the current ceasefire agreement.

Ambassador Azar concluded with a call for the Lebanese government to take more decisive measures against Hezbollah, not merely through dialogue but by actively dismantling its military capabilities. He reiterated Israel’s assertive stance regarding its northern borders and the necessity for ensuring the safety of its citizens against any future aggression from Hezbollah.
