Iran Urges UN Action Following Trump’s Remarks on Arming Protesters

The CSR Journal Magazine

Tehran has officially requested the United Nations Security Council to take swift measures after U.S. President Donald Trump revealed that the United States had attempted to supply weapons to anti-government protesters in Iran. This appeal came in a letter from Iran’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, who characterized Trump’s comments as a “clear admission” of inciting violence and meddling in Iran’s domestic matters, according to Iranian state media.

Iravani criticized the United States for its ongoing policy of supporting and financing militant groups in the Middle East, asserting that such actions are a gross violation of the UN Charter and fundamental international law. He accused Washington of working to turn peaceful demonstrations in Iran into chaos and bloodshed, emphasizing that supplying arms to groups in another nation triggers international responsibility.

Call for Firm Condemnation from Security Council

The Iranian envoy urged the Security Council to firmly denounce the statements made by Trump and to ensure that violations of international norms are adequately addressed. He called for a clear declaration that any actions amounting to state support for terrorism would be met with zero tolerance. Iravani also stated that the United States should be held accountable for “all losses and suffering inflicted on civilians and civilian infrastructure” during protests that occurred in December 2025 and January 2026.

Trump’s Admission of Failed Arms Supply

During a recent Easter event at the White House, President Trump acknowledged the U.S. efforts to arm Iranian protesters but indicated that these attempts were unsuccessful. He stated, “We sent guns, a lot of guns. They were supposed to go to the people so they could fight back against these thugs.” Trump added that the intended recipients kept the weapons instead of using them as planned. His comments express disappointment over the outcome of the operation.

Although Trump did not specify who was responsible for diverting the weapons, he previously suggested that “Kurdish intermediaries” might be at fault, although he did not provide evidence to support this claim. These statements from Trump emerged amidst widespread anti-government protests in Iran earlier this year, during which he had previously promised that “help was on the way” for the protesters.

Regional Implications of US Actions

In addition to addressing the United Nations, Iran has also called on regional powers, including the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, to adhere to principles of good neighborliness. The Iranian government is seeking to consolidate regional support and to emphasize the importance of stability and peace in the area. This appeal reflects Tehran’s concern regarding external influences and actions that may destabilize the region further.
