The CSR Journal Magazine

Vaishnavi Adkar has emerged as India’s new women’s singles No.1, achieving this status following a remarkable run on the ITF circuit in 2026. The 21-year-old from Pune has captured the attention of the tennis world by moving from a ranking of No. 643 at the beginning of the year to No. 383 in the latest WTA rankings. This significant leap has seen her surpass Sahaja Yamalapalli, who now ranks No. 384, marking a notable shift in the hierarchy of Indian women’s tennis.

Adkar’s ascent within the rankings highlights her talent and determination, as she has been a predominant figure in Indian tennis this season. Additionally, Vaidehi Chaudhari and Shrivalli Bhamidipathy are positioned as the third and fourth-ranked Indian players respectively. This progression not only signifies Adkar’s individual achievements but also the growing competitiveness among Indian female tennis players.

Participation in the Billie Jean King Cup

Currently, Vaishnavi Adkar is representing India in the Billie Jean King Cup 2026 Asia-Oceania Group I campaign taking place in New Delhi. Her remarkable journey on the ITF circuit led to her first call-up for this prestigious team event, where she is now regarded as India’s leading singles player. The Indian team is expected to lean upon Adkar and Yamalapalli for singles matches, while seasoned players Ankita Raina and Rutuja Bhosale will likely undertake doubles responsibilities.

The squad for the tournament includes Vaishnavi Adkar, Sahaja Yamalapalli, Ankita Raina, Rutuja Bhosale, and Zeel Desai. Zeel has stepped in following injuries sustained by Shrivalli Bhamidipathy and Vaidehi Chaudhari. The team’s composition reflects a blend of emerging talent and experienced players, aiming to perform strongly in the competition.

The Billie Jean King Cup serves as a crucial platform for international exposure, and Adkar’s leading role is anticipated to significantly contribute to India’s performance in this tournament.
