Sam Altman Discusses Transformations in Software Development Due to AI Models

Sam Altman has articulated a transformative perspective on the future of software development, highlighting that new AI models may empower a single individual to complete tasks traditionally requiring an entire software engineering team. In an interview with Axios’ Mike Allen, Altman asserted that as AI technology advances, the nature of coding could dramatically shift.

Altman remarked that while existing AI tools are enhancing developer productivity, the upcoming models are expected to deliver even greater efficiency. Currently, some developers report a productivity increase of two to three times when utilising AI assistance. This leap could enable individual developers, bolstered by AI and computational resources, to accomplish what an entire team would typically handle.

According to Altman, statements like, “I can perform the work of an entire team with these tools,” are anticipated to become increasingly common. This shift will likely lead organisations to rethink their hiring practices and the structure of their teams, particularly for software projects where automation can manage repetitive and time-consuming tasks.

Ongoing Changes in Coding Roles

Altman stressed that the transition towards enhanced AI capabilities is not a distant future but is underway. The evolution in software development has become evident within a short timeframe. A marked difference is noticeable between the early months of 2025 and early 2026, with a growing number of developers relying on AI for tasks such as coding, error correction, and problem-solving.

At present, AI tools function primarily as assistants in the development process. However, future AI models may significantly broaden their responsibilities, potentially overseeing larger segments of development tasks. This would allow developers to dedicate more time to critical decision-making and system design.
