Farmer Found Dead Outside LDF Office in Vaikom, Sparks Political Row

The CSR Journal Magazine

A farmer was tragically discovered hanging outside the Left Democratic Front (LDF) office located in Thalayazham, Vaikom, in Kottayam district, Keralam on April 7. The individual has been named as Chellappan Pulikkaseri, who was known as a supporter of the Communist Party of India (CPI). Local police reported that Pulikkaseri had previously claimed that leaders within the CPI had adversely affected his livelihood.

Political Responses to the Situation

The incident has sparked significant political reactions. K C Venugopal, a Member of Parliament and General Secretary (Organisation) of the All India Congress Committee, held a press conference in Thiruvananthapuram where he urged Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to address the circumstances surrounding this tragic event. Venugopal voiced criticism against the ruling LDF, asserting that the party has driven farmers to despair, leading to situations such as this.

At the press conference, Venugopal stated his confidence in the United Democratic Front (UDF) reclaiming power in the impending elections, declaring, “Kerala is ready for a UDF government.” He emphasised the need for a government that genuinely supports farmers and called on the Chief Minister to respond to the incident. This emphasis on farmer welfare has emerged as a focal point ahead of the elections.

The situation has raised eyebrows concerning the LDF’s handling of agricultural issues. Allegations of neglect and poor governance have surfaced, intensifying the political climate as the state approaches elections.

Upcoming Elections in Keralam

The political landscape in Keralam is gearing up for Assembly elections on April 9, which will determine the representatives for 140 constituencies. The Vaikom Assembly seat is currently held by C.K. Asha from the CPI, a position the party has maintained since 2006. The previous MLA, K. Ajith, also hailing from the CPI, has set a precedent for the seat’s representation.

Amidst this tense political backdrop, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who is also a CPI (M) candidate, conducted a roadshow in Dharmadam on April 6. The event drew enthusiastic crowds from his supporter base who rallied behind the Chief Minister and his party.

Prior to the elections, the LDF government presented a performance report outlining its achievements over the past decade. Chief Minister Vijayan stated that 97 per cent of the commitments made in the 2021 LDF election manifesto have been fulfilled, with the remaining promises nearing completion. He underscored that accountability to the public is integral to governance, highlighting that such performance reports have been consistently released since 2017.

Communities React to the Incident

The discovery of Pulikkaseri’s body has caused widespread distress within local communities. Many residents are reportedly grappling with the implications of this tragedy on their own livelihoods and the broader agricultural environment in the region. Conversations among locals have centred on the urgency of addressing the challenges faced by farmers and the need for effective governance that prioritises their welfare.

As the elections approach, this incident may play a pivotal role in shaping public sentiment. Both major political parties are anticipated to focus on agricultural policies and support systems needed to prevent further tragedies of this nature.

It remains to be seen how this incident will influence voter behaviour and party strategies in the days leading up to the polls. The focus on farmer welfare has amplified discussions about the future direction of Keralam’s governance and the responsibilities of elected officials to their constituents.
