Fake Income Tax Gang Busted in Uttar Pradesh for Extorting Traders

The CSR Journal Magazine

A criminal group impersonating Income Tax officials has been apprehended in Uttar Pradesh, following reports from traders in the Shadiyabad market in Ghazipur about extortion attempts. The vigilance of shopkeepers led to the capture of three members of the gang, while their leader managed to evade arrest. Ghazipur City Superintendent of Police, Rakesh Mishra, confirmed the arrests and stated that teams have been organised to locate the gang’s mastermind, Sars Kumar Gupta.

Local traders from the Shadiyabad and Saidpur markets had voiced their concerns regarding the gang’s activities over a period of several days. The group reportedly conducted mock raids on shops, posing as tax officials, and coerced traders into relinquishing considerable amounts of money under duress. Alarm bells were raised when traders decided to reach out to Ikramul Haq, the president of the Industrial Trade Board, regarding the dubious “income-tax raids.”

The situation escalated during a recent attempt by the gang to intimidate traders once again. A group of vigilant shopkeepers alerted the local police, who quickly intervened and captured three suspects. Reports suggest that the gang comprises eight individuals, including one woman. This development has resulted in traders filing an official complaint at the Shadiyabad police station, calling for a thorough investigation and stringent action against those involved.

Investigation Underway to Uncover Entire Network

Following the arrests, Ghazipur Police have commenced an interrogation of the detained members, aiming to unravel the complete structure of the gang. Authorities are focusing their attention on Sars Kumar Gupta, the alleged leader, who remains missing. The police have launched an extensive search operation to locate him and bring him to justice.

The actions of the gang have raised significant alarm among traders in the region, prompting increased vigilance. Local shopkeepers are actively collaborating with law enforcement to ensure that such fraudulent activities do not recur. The revelations surrounding the gang’s operation have created a sense of urgency for the police to address similar scams in the future.

In the wake of these events, the modus operandi and tactics employed by the gang have been scrutinised, revealing how they exploited the lack of awareness among shopkeepers regarding legitimate tax operations. Law enforcement agencies are now urging business owners to remain cautious and verify the identities of any officials claiming to conduct tax-related inspections.

Public Concern Intensified by Social Media Postings

As the investigation continues, social media has played a pivotal role in amplifying public concern. A photograph of Sars Kumar Gupta with Ghazipur MP Afzal Ansari has recently emerged online, drawing considerable attention and criticism from netizens. This development has intensified scrutiny not only on Gupta but also on the suspected connections he may have with political figures.

The presence of Gupta in social media posts has raised questions about the extent of his influence and the potential protection he may have received. Local authorities are urged to consider these dimensions as they pursue their inquiries. The ongoing situation highlights the broader implications of such scams and the need for a cooperative approach to ensure safety and accountability in local commerce.

As the local community awaits further updates, traders remain hopeful for a swift resolution to the issue, emphasising the importance of collaborative efforts between law enforcement and the public in combatting fraudulent activities.
