Viral Image of PM Modi at Tea Garden Is AI-Generated

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the Manohari Tea Estate in Assam’s Dibrugarh has garnered significant attention, particularly through various photos and videos shared across social media platforms. During this visit, the Prime Minister interacted with tea garden workers who were dressed in traditional Assamese attire, contributing to the cultural essence of the event.

The visit aimed to highlight the tea industry’s importance in the region while also touching upon broader themes of employment and cultural heritage. Several moments from the occasion were captured and disseminated, leading to an array of responses from the public and online communities.

However, amidst the flurry of images circulating online, one particular photograph has sparked considerable debate and scrutiny, as it allegedly depicts the Prime Minister at the estate in a production-like setting.

Debate Surrounding the Viral Photo

In the viral image, PM Modi is portrayed sitting among tea garden workers, surrounded by cameras, lighting equipment, and crew members. This image quickly attracted criticism from various quarters, with some social media users alleging that it was staged for electoral propaganda and not an authentic moment from the visit.

Notably, former cricketer and current Trinamool Congress MP Kirti Azad voiced his concerns on X, suggesting that the image’s composition was overly manufactured, likening the presentation to that of a theatrical performance. This public discourse reflected a broader sentiment questioning the authenticity of political imagery and communications.

Several users, including those on Facebook, pointed out similar sentiments, arguing that such portrayals are designed to create a favourable image of the Prime Minister, devoid of substantive policy discussion or performance analysis. These criticisms underscored a growing scepticism regarding political messaging in India.

Fact-Checking Findings

In light of the discussions surrounding the image, we conducted a thorough investigation into its authenticity. The findings revealed that the viral image is, in fact, generated by artificial intelligence. Multiple signs of distortion were noted in the photograph, including unclear text on signage and unusual blurriness surrounding the faces of those depicted.

One significant detail observed was that the feet of an individual situated behind a curtain appeared to be missing from the image, raising questions about its authenticity. Additionally, the shooting clapboard in the photograph was found to be positioned unrealistically, further casting doubt on what was portrayed.

The investigation employed advanced AI detection tools which corroborated that there is a 99.9 per cent likelihood that the image is indeed AI-generated. Furthermore, Google’s SynthID confirmed the image’s creation through the Google Gemini platform, reinforcing the findings of the fact-checkers.

Conclusion on the Image’s Authenticity

Given the comprehensive analysis and the technological confirmations surrounding the image, it is now evident that the photo circulating online is not an authentic representation of PM Modi’s visit to the tea estate. Instead, it has been established as a product of artificial intelligence.

This incident highlights the growing complexities in discerning real events from digitally manipulated representations in contemporary media. As technology continues to evolve, so too does the need for vigilant scrutiny of images that shape public perception.

Ultimately, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fact-checking in the digital age, where misinformation can easily proliferate amidst genuine public interest in political activities.
