Extended Deployment of Central Forces in West Bengal Post-Election

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Election Commission has decided to maintain a significant security presence in West Bengal even after the polls conclude. A total of 500 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) will remain stationed in the state to manage post-election dynamics and ensure public safety.

Key Responsibilities and Allocation

The deployment is strategically divided to cover both technical security and general law and order:

* Securing the Mandate (200 Companies): Approximately 200 companies are specifically assigned to guard Strong Rooms and Counting Centers. Their primary role is to protect EVMs from tampering or damage until the final results are declared and the counting process is officially certified.

* Preventing Civil Unrest: The presence of these forces aims to discourage “re-poll” demands triggered by orchestrated chaos and to prevent any attempts to disrupt the peace once results start coming in.

* Law and Order Maintenance: The remaining companies will be deployed across sensitive zones to curb post-poll violence, a recurring issue that has historically plagued the state’s political landscape.

Why the Precaution?

This move is largely seen as a proactive measure based on lessons learned from past electoral cycles.

Context of Violence: Previous elections in West Bengal including the last Assembly polls and subsequent by-elections were marred by reports of severe clashes, injuries, and fatalities. High-profile cases, such as the deaths of political workers, have frequently raised questions regarding the adequacy of state-level security.

By retaining 500 companies, the Commission is signaling a zero-tolerance policy toward post-election bloodshed, choosing to prioritize preventive stability over a hasty withdrawal of forces.
