Why Are Donald Trump and Elon Musk Silent on NASA’s Artemis II Mission?

The CSR Journal Magazine

As NASA prepares for Artemis II, the first crewed mission of its lunar program, the silence of Donald Trump and Elon Musk has raised eyebrows. Both figures have been vocal on space policy and exploration in the past. Their lack of public response has sparked speculation about political priorities, private space ambitions, and shifting focus within the global space race.

NASA successfully launched Artemis II from the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, on April 1, 2026. This mission marks the first crewed journey to the Moon in more than five decades, generating significant public interest and engagement. Over 400,000 spectators witnessed the launch, and social media platforms, particularly YouTube, saw the event receive more than 17 million views.

Many notable personalities, such as Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, and actor Tom Hanks, praised the mission. Despite the widespread acclaim and attention, SpaceX’s CEO Elon Musk has notably refrained from commenting on Artemis II, which raises questions given his usual enthusiasm for space exploration.

Musk is well-known for vocalising his visions of space settlement, particularly regarding Mars colonisation. He has previously positioned SpaceX as a competitor to NASA, notably through the development of its Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets, which focus on cost-effective space travel while also achieving reusability. SpaceX is actively engaged in testing Starship, poised to be the most powerful rocket created by humanity.

Theories Regarding Musk’s Silence

Despite his historically strong interest in space missions, Musk has not shared any thoughts on the Artemis II mission publicly. His account on social media platform X remains devoid of any posts related to the mission, leading to speculation regarding his lack of commentary.

Aerospace engineer Christopher David recently offered a potential theory regarding Musk’s silence, suggesting that jealousy may play a role. David has a history of making predictions about space missions, one of which indicated doubts about Starship’s capability to achieve orbit, a claim he made five years ago. In his recent commentary, he referred to the heavy design of Starship, stating that reusability of both stages conflicts with the ability to deliver considerable payloads to low Earth orbit.

David’s commentary gained traction on social media, where others weighed in, noting the unusual quiet from Musk’s followers regarding the success of the NASA mission. Some users alluded to Musk’s historical pattern of taking credit within the space industry and speculated about his qualifications for commenting on such achievements.

Background on SpaceX’s Contract and Future Implications

In another context, the silence may also be related to SpaceX’s recent contractual issues with NASA. In October 2025, NASA terminated the contract for Artemis III initially awarded to SpaceX, which was valued at $4.4 billion. This contract was integral for utilising a lunar variant of Starship for the anticipated 2027 mission. NASA cited delays in SpaceX’s development as the reason for contract termination, which might impact Musk’s current stance on Artemis II.

This competition between NASA and SpaceX is significant as NASA uses its Space Launch System (SLS) for Artemis II, further highlighting the divergence between the two organisations. In July 2024, Musk commented that Starship could facilitate a significantly greater payload capacity to the Moon compared to what is expected in the Artemis programme.

Moving forward, NASA plans to land astronauts on the lunar surface during the Artemis IV mission, set to launch in 2028. The developments surrounding these missions could influence the broader landscape of space exploration and commercial partnerships in the coming years.
