Pakistan Continues Iran-US Mediation Efforts Despite Challenges

The CSR Journal Magazine

The commitment of Pakistan to mediate discussions between the United States and Iran remains strong, despite the Foreign Office acknowledging the presence of certain obstacles. This statement was made following provocative remarks made by US President Donald Trump, who threatened to bomb Iran if it did not acquiesce to Washington’s demands for a peace agreement.

The Foreign Office spokesperson, Tahir Andrabi, emphasised that the Pakistani government is dedicated to encouraging dialogue aimed at resolving ongoing tensions. While specific roadblocks were not articulated, the situation remains tense, reflecting the complexities involved in achieving a diplomatic resolution.

Andrabi stressed Pakistan’s role as a neutral facilitator and expressed confidence that both the US and Iran recognise Islamabad’s efforts. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s intention to foster an environment conducive to substantial negotiations amongst involved parties.

Regional Developments and High-Level Contacts

Recent developments indicate progress in communication between Pakistan and Iran, illustrated by the confirmation that 20 Pakistani-flagged vessels have been allowed to transit the Strait of Hormuz. This event is being interpreted as a positive indication for regional stability, although it remains unclear if any Pakistani ships have actually passed through the strategic waterway.

The situation in the Strait of Hormuz has been fraught with tension, particularly since Iran imposed restrictions on oil and gas shipments following escalating conflicts involving the US and Israel. These disruptions have contributed to a rise in energy prices and significant economic impact across the region.

Furthermore, Andrabi highlighted ongoing high-level dialogues, including a recent conversation between Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. In that discussion, the leaders stressed the importance of building trust to facilitate forthcoming negotiations, with the Iranian president praising Pakistan’s supportive role.

International Cooperation and Host Offer

The recent visit of Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar to China resulted in a collaborative five-point action plan aimed at ensuring an immediate ceasefire and restoring normal maritime operations in the Strait of Hormuz. This initiative has reportedly been well received among regional stakeholders, including the US and Iran.

Dar undertook this trip even while advised to rest due to a recent injury, signalling the importance Pakistan attaches to its strategic partnerships, particularly with China. Andrabi noted that Chinese officials expressed gratitude for Pakistan’s dedication to cooperative relations.

In conjunction with these developments, the Islamabad meeting involving foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, and Egypt marked the second such gathering focused on reducing regional tensions. Following those discussions, Dar indicated that Pakistan is prepared to host direct negotiations between the US and Iran, stating that the country would consider it an honour to facilitate comprehensive dialogue.

Pakistan’s Ongoing Operations and Regional Concerns

In a separate context, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that officials would visit Urumqi to conduct discussions with Afghanistan. This marks the first major interaction since cross-border military operations were initiated by Islamabad, following incidents of aggression attributed to Afghan Taliban forces.

During the recent developments, Andrabi reiterated that Pakistan remains steadfast in its operations, emphasising that efforts against perceived terrorist threats continue unabated. Islamabad has accused the Taliban regime in Kabul of harbouring factions that carry out attacks within Pakistan’s borders, a claim denied by Afghan authorities.

Since the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan in August 2021, violence has surged, illustrating the ongoing and unresolved tensions in the region. Pakistan’s stance and initiatives continue to focus on addressing these complex security challenges while seeking to engage in constructive diplomacy with both Iran and Afghanistan.
