India Successfully Evacuates Around 1,200 Nationals from Iran via Armenia and Azerbaijan

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has announced the safe evacuation of over 1,200 Indian citizens from Iran as tensions escalate in West Asia. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal provided details during an inter-ministerial briefing in New Delhi, emphasizing that the evacuation efforts are being coordinated through Armenia and Azerbaijan. Among those evacuated, approximately 845 individuals are students. Jaiswal clarified that 996 individuals were moved to Armenia, while 204 others were directed to Azerbaijan, with both groups receiving support from the MEA.

Coordination with Local Authorities for Safety

The Ministry has been collaborating with Indian diplomatic missions and local officials in both Armenia and Azerbaijan to ensure the secure return of Indian citizens. Jaiswal noted that arrangements are underway to assist evacuees during transit prior to their return to India. This operation underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding its nationals amid the ongoing regional crisis.

Prime Minister Engages with Global Leaders over West Asia Situation

In a related development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been engaging in discussions with various world leaders regarding the situation in West Asia. Jaiswal highlighted a conversation that took place on March 28th between the Prime Minister and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia. During their dialogue, the leaders exchanged views on the current conflict, with Prime Minister Modi condemning attacks on energy infrastructure in the region. The discussion also covered the importance of maintaining open and secure navigation in shipping lanes.

Passenger Returns from West Asia Reach Over 600,000

As the security situation evolves, more than 600,000 passengers have returned to India from the West Asia region since the onset of the conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran, which has now entered its second month. The MEA reiterated its commitment to prioritizing the safety and welfare of the Indian community in the area. Aseem R. Mahajan, Additional Secretary for Gulf Affairs at the MEA, provided these updates during the inter-ministerial briefing, stressing the ongoing efforts to facilitate a safe return for Indian nationals.

Update on Indian Nationals in UAE

During the briefing, Mahajan also addressed an incident involving an Indian national injured in the United Arab Emirates, reaffirming the government’s focus on the security of its citizens abroad. Since February 28th, approximately 624,000 passengers have traveled back to India from the West Asia region, indicating a sustained demand for repatriation flights. The airlines are operating limited non-scheduled flights based on safety assessments, with around 90 flights planned to depart from the UAE to various destinations in India today.
