A shocking case of alleged domestic violence has emerged from Schaumburg, Illinois. Here, a 28-year-old Abhijit Patel has been charged with first-degree murder for killing his father, 67-year-old Anupam Patel, with a sledgehammer. The incident took place on November 29, during the Thanksgiving weekend, inside the family’s suburban home.

According to Cook County prosecutors, Abhijit Patel attacked his father while he was lying in bed, striking him multiple times on the head. A sledgehammer was later recovered near the victim’s bed, and an autopsy confirmed severe head trauma, including a fractured skull and broken nose.

A Missed Call That Raised the Alarm

Anupam Patel, who suffered from diabetes and was not employed due to health issues, followed a strict daily routine. Each morning, he would call his wife around 8 a.m. to share his blood sugar readings, which were monitored through a glucose device connected to her phone.

On the day of the murder, that call never came. As his glucose levels began dropping and repeated phone calls went unanswered, his wife grew increasingly anxious. She returned home around 10:30 a.m. to find the garage door open, an unusual sight, and her son telling her he had “taken care of Dad” and that she should check on him. She soon discovered her husband lying in bed, covered in blood, and immediately called the police.

Confession and Disturbing Claims

When officers arrived, Abhijit Patel surrendered without resistance. During questioning, he admitted to killing his father and claimed he had a “religious obligation” to do so, alleging that his father had molested him as a child. Prosecutors stated that medical professionals involved in his care believe these allegations are delusional.

Court records show Patel has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and had previously been hospitalized for psychiatric treatment. He had also exhibited troubling behavior in the past, including making threatening comments that led to him being banned from his university campus pending psychiatric evaluation.

Restraining Order Ignored, Bail Denied

At the time of the killing, Abhijit Patel was under an active order of protection that prohibited him from contacting his father due to earlier threats. Despite this, his parents allowed him to continue living at home.

A judge has now ordered Patel to be held without bail, and he is barred from contacting his mother. His next court hearing is scheduled for December 19.
