64-Year-Old Retired Official Earns MTech, Sets Sights on IIM Lucknow

The CSR Journal Magazine

A 64-year-old Uttar Pradesh government official has completed his MTech, securing a top ten position in his class. This achievement stands out significantly, as it is often a challenge for even younger individuals to find the time and motivation to pursue education alongside their careers. His son, Shashank Srivastava, shared his father’s impressive journey on social media, highlighting his determination to continue learning well into his later years.

Most of the classmates were approximately half his age, which added an interesting dynamic to his academic experience. For the elderly individual, however, the challenge was not merely about returning to an academic environment. He had to balance his studies alongside a demanding professional life, which required significant time commitment and dedication.

Although he retired in 2022, the individual remained active in the workforce by taking on the role of Deputy CEO at the regulatory authority managing municipal corporations in Uttar Pradesh. This position entails extensive travel across various districts, focusing on assessing and evaluating ongoing projects on-site.

Challenges of Managing Work and Studies

With responsibilities that involve frequent long-distance travel, the official’s academic pursuits might seem daunting. Despite covering nearly 1,000 km each week for work, he continued dedicating time to his studies. His son noted the disciplined manner in which he utilised travel time between different locations, often using it to prepare for classes and exams.

Shashank explained that his father transformed travel time into productive study sessions, taking notes and revising materials relevant to his coursework. As a result, he entered examinations feeling more equipped than many younger peers, who might have thought that age would hinder a performance advantage.

This unwavering commitment to education allowed him not only to complete his degree but also to finish among the top ten students in a competition that largely included individuals significantly younger than himself.

Inspiration for Lifelong Learning

Shashank expressed that his father’s academic accomplishment goes beyond merely earning a degree; it embodies a mindset emphasising continuous learning despite the pressures of professional and personal responsibilities. He noted the tendency for many individuals to neglect self-improvement, yet his father consistently prioritised education throughout his career.

This narrative has resonated with many social media users, resulting in shared experiences of returning to educational settings in later life. Various individuals recount personal stories, such as one who enrolled in a BSc in Computer Science at the age of 50, thereby illustrating that pursuing education can occur at any stage.

Rather than viewing the completion of an MTech as a concluding milestone, the 64-year-old has set ambitious new goals. Reports indicate that he is now applying for an Executive Education programme at IIM Lucknow, demonstrating his unwavering ambition.

Impact on Future Generations

Shashank’s observations have deeply influenced his own outlook regarding education and professional development. He remarked on the comfort derived from knowing that the motivation to enhance skills lies within him, partly due to learning from his father’s exemplary journey.

The achievements of the elderly individual challenge existing perceptions that education and ambition are limited to earlier life stages. At 64, he not only returned to the classroom but also seamlessly integrated learning into a busy career, accomplished his MTech in commendable standing, and has set sights on further educational endeavours.

The journey may have led to the completion of a degree, yet it is evident that for him, learning remains an enduring pursuit.
