The CSR Journal Magazine

A total of 44 students from a government school in Tamil Nadu were hospitalized after a lizard was found in their midday meal, leading to widespread panic among children and faculty. The event occurred at a Corporation Middle School located in the West Zone of the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation, where students from Classes 4, 5, and 6 were consuming their meals when the contamination was detected.

Reports indicate that 31 boys and 13 girls were affected by the incident. Following the discovery of the lizard, authorities promptly utilized ambulances to transport the children to the District Government Medical College Hospital for medical attention.

Official Response

The affected students, who are currently receiving treatment, were visited by Coimbatore City Mayor K Ranganayaki Ramachandran and Municipal Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabhakaran. The officials met with the children and consulted with medical staff at the hospital to assess the care being administered. Updates regarding the students’ health statuses have not yet been disclosed by the authorities.

Political Reactions

The incident provoked significant reactions from political figures, with BJP leader Vinoj P Selvam expressing his dismay at the situation. He described the event as “shocking and heartbreaking,” and in a message on X, he referred to the hospitalization of the students as deeply concerning, expressing hopes for their swift recovery.

Selvam also discussed a similar case from February near Pollachi, where students from Dasanayakanpalayam school experienced health issues linked to their midday meal.

Calls for Action

Amid these occurrences, Selvam criticized the state government for the quality of food served in schools and demanded immediate inspections of the school meal program.

He condemned the government for inadequately addressing food safety issues, citing previous incidents where poor food quality was reported. In his statements, he called for a thorough review of hygiene standards in meals served to students across all schools in the state.

Broader Context

The midday meal scheme in India, which aims to provide nutritious meals to millions of children enrolled in government schools, has been the subject of scrutiny due to various incidents of food contamination.

These occurrences raise serious questions regarding hygiene practices and monitoring protocols within the scheme, prompting a need for enhanced oversight to safeguard children’s health.
