27-Year-Old Indian-Origin Man Killed in Surrey, Canada

A 27-year-old man of Indian descent, identified as Jasman Sekhon, was shot and killed in an apparent targeted attack in Surrey, Canada on Saturday night. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) released this information in a statement on Monday. The shooting occurred within a townhouse complex located in the Sullivan Heights area of Surrey.

Police Response and Victim Details

Authorities from Surrey Police Service were dispatched to the scene following reports of gunfire in the 15100 block of 60 Avenue at approximately 6:39 PM. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Sekhon with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. According to the IHIT, Sekhon had previous interactions with law enforcement and was believed to be involved in drug-related activities.

Witness Accounts and Investigation

Witnesses reported to local media that Sekhon was seen fleeing from a dark SUV prior to the gunfire, as two men exited the vehicle and began shooting. Approximately 15 minutes following the incident, a blue Hyundai SUV was located in flames near the intersection of 186th Street and 44 Avenue in Surrey. Authorities are currently investigating whether this vehicle is linked to the homicide.

Characteristics of the Shooting

This incident is being treated as part of a larger pattern of gang-related violence in the area. Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT indicated that the shooting was brazen and took place in a neighborhood typically known for its tranquility. The police are actively working to uncover the details surrounding the homicide and to identify all individuals involved.

Law enforcement is encouraging anyone who may have been in the vicinity of either location between 6 PM and 7:30 PM on Saturday or those with any video footage of the shooting to come forward. This tragic incident occurs in the backdrop of an increase in gun violence in Surrey, which has seen multiple shootings in a short span of time.
