10 held for spreading fake news on LPG supply in Bhilwara

The CSR Journal Magazine

In Bhilwara district of Rajasthan, 10 people were detained for spreading rumours related to fuel and LPG shortages. This action was taken at a crucial time when there is high concern regarding energy supplies as tension has increased in the Middle East for over a month now. With the existing restriction imposed by Iran in the Strait of Hormuz—a crucial route through which about 20 percent of global petroleum shipments pass—LPG supply chains have been impacted. However, the Indian government has maintained that no LPG shortage exists.

Spreading false news

The Superintendent of Police for Bhilwara district Dharmendra Singh, confirmed during a media interaction that some individuals were spreading false news claiming an LPG shortage. Even though police authorities clarified that there isn’t any shortage and people should not fall for false news, some people are still creating an atmosphere of false narratives.

Singh noted that the arrests were a preventive measure to ensure the rumours stop. “Police are closely watching all social media activities and if required more legal actions will be taken; cases will even be registered if rules are breached.” Regarding these arrests, police said the accused were spreading false content online which was creating panic in the public; they were doing this just to gain followers and subscribers. We identified ten such accounts and took action against them. They have currently deleted their videos and many have posted apology videos. “Those detained have social media pages with a good following, one of them was “Berozgaar Boyzz,” with 1.4 million followers

What is the situation in middle-east?

Conflict in middle-east started from February 28 when Israel and the United States launched attack on Iran, citing security threats. Retaliating to this attack, Iran targeted Israel and US military bases, and even the Gulf countries. Israel and the US attacked claiming Iran is developing nuclear weapons, while Tehran has denied this, stating its nuclear programme is for civilian use.
