UGC-NET Re-Test for English, Commerce, and Sociology at no Extra Cost.

The UGC-NET re-test for three subjects will take place on September 9 and September 10, 2026, without any additional fees for candidates. This decision comes in light of several complaints received regarding errors in the question papers for English, Commerce, and Sociology. The National Testing Agency (NTA) has assured that the number of qualifying candidates and subject-wise allocations will remain unchanged as a result of this re-examination.

NTA has stated that it aims to enhance its internal processes to prevent similar issues in the future. By reevaluating the stages involved in setting, moderating, translating, and composing question papers, the agency seeks to ensure that such errors are addressed at the source. The commitment to a fair and accurate examination system is reportedly at the forefront of NTA’s objectives.

Internal Review of Processes and Protocols

In light of the identified issues, the NTA has initiated an internal review of its processes and protocols. This review aims to ensure necessary corrections for future examinations to uphold standards of accountability. The agency formed a committee to investigate the reported errors in the English, Commerce, and Sociology papers and has acted upon the recommendations of this committee.

As a direct outcome of the committee’s findings, the re-examinations will take place for two subjects on September 9, and Sociology will follow one day later. This decision aligns with NTA’s goal of providing a fair examination environment, restoring confidence among candidates. Reports suggest that the errors included incorrect questions and repetition of previously used materials, leading to the necessity for re-testing.

The re-exam arrangement has drawn considerable attention and concern from various stakeholders, including the affected students who view this measure as essential for maintaining the integrity of the examination process.

Student Protests and Calls for Accountability

In response to the developments, NSUI demanded accountability from NTA’s leadership, asserting that thousands of candidates are now compelled to retake examinations due to mistakes made by the agency. The student group contended that these lapses are unjustly affecting students who have invested significant effort and resources in their preparation.

The NSUI has charged that the NTA’s mismanagement has led to a situation where students must bear the consequences of errors made by the examination body. They have called for a thorough explanation from NTA regarding the integrity of the examination process, including questions around the potential leak of examination papers prior to the test dates.
