Telangana Passes SC Reservation Bill for 59 Sub-Castes

The Telangana legislative assembly on Tuesday passed the Scheduled Caste (Rationalisation of Reservation) Bill 2025. This bill will give way for SC sub-categorisation for reservation in government education and employment.
The bill was tabled by Minister Damodar Rajanarasimh and was passed with the support of opposition parties, including BRS and BJP.
As per the bill, the SC category will be divided into three sub-categories: Group 1 will get 1% reservation within the 15% quota for SCs. Group 2 will get 9% of the reservation while Group 3 will get 5% of the reservation from within the 15% total quota. According to the CM, this percentage will be revised after the 2026 census.

Telangana CM Celebrates

Telangana CM A Revanth Reddy called this day historic and said that “many activists have sacrificed their lives during the struggle for sub-categorisation.”
CM Revanth referred to the protest by the Madiga Reservation Poratta Samithi (MRPS), who will get 9% reservation as the sub-caste falls in group 2.
“59 subcastes have been divided into three groups and distributed with 15% reservation among them. The government will also support the families of those who lost their lives during the struggle for SC classification. Those families will be given priority in the allotment of Indiramma houses and Rajiv Yuva Vikasam schemes.” said CM Reddy
